$300 for a dc-3GHz HP Spectrum Analyser? That's a bargain!

That is an HP 859x series analyzer, and $300 is a good but not omg bargain price considering the age, condition, etc. Prices for these on eBay are often WAY too high.

I believe the isolator is only to protect your equipment from rf. You need their 1 inch ferrite choke and what ever turns you can do at around 50'.
@n9amiwavelengthradio29 күн бұрын
The isolator is for common mode that’s on the coax. It can happen with an unbalanced antenna system. Especially when the maker builds an insufficient balun.
@christophersmith1155Ай бұрын
I had ABR make my coax and use 7 ferrites built to the coax. Ferrites right at base of the antenna so nothing comes down and in to my home or my neighbors.

#1, If you transmit, you have an RF field. This is what transmission is all about. #2 If you have wires, pipes, ducts, etc. those are antennas. They will pick up your transmission. #3 If you have a battery operated scope, you can see the RF in the HF band. #4 There are common mode inductors which are very often used to provide a high impedance path in signal wires, such as thermostat, telephone, etc, low voltage control wire. #5 If you are cheap, you can find those filters in the old power supplies from computers and other items that use them to reduce RF getting out for FCC complyance. $6 Those filters work well to knock down common mode noise much better than some ferrite beads. Look for 15mH bifilar chokes on powdered iron torrid cores. Had to do commercial sound at a fairground less than 800 feet from an AM broadcast antenna. The sound system was picking up the radio station on the 150 feet of microphone cable between the sound booth and the stage. Had to add the filters to clean that up. The common mode RF on the cable was over 30 volts P=P. The filter cut the current to next to nothing, so the signal was well below the detection caused by the op amp inputs. The 1.7MHZ signal was cut by the 15mH choke by more than 60 DB into 75 ohms. Going frm the shack to the antenna should be done with COAX or twin lead to reduce emission from the wire by using equal differential currents. This does mean a proper counterpoise on the antenna to stop RV currents on the outside of the transmission line.

Is there a possiblity that the coax has low quality shielding?
@n9amiwavelengthradioАй бұрын
Negative Dx Eng coax.. Its all been fixed by moving the feedline entrance to the building. I will probably end up building a proper balun 4:1 Gunella wrapped seperate on each ferrite. I know better but I did not have anything here so just purchased a so called quality made commercial pos. My baluns are good for 5KW CCA. It was my mistake and was in a rush to get a station up at the time.
@danhabecker1348Ай бұрын
@@n9amiwavelengthradio Yea DX Engineering offers up good stuff for the money. Nice you have a solution until you can build up a better balun.

It doesn't matter what I use for a radio, when ever I key the mic my motion detection outside light will come on. Even my low power FRS radio will trigger the light.
@n9amiwavelengthradioАй бұрын
A few radio is low power even though uhf however a new light would probably fix that one that better quality. Just like me not building the guanalla balun and antenna, short cuts will come back to haunt you.

John, I had the same problem with furnace and sprinklers. All I had to add was a 0.01uf capacitor across the furnace wire and sprinkler lines. Furnaces and sprinklers are not RFI hardened, so you have to make it hardened yourself.

If anyone has ever heard a, Johnson 500 on air, then you know what (IMO) the GREATEST sounding AM ham transmitter audio is. ITS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! I'm aware of someone who has widebanded a, Viking 500, and I'll never understand why. Plate modulated transmitters of that era were the 1st "HIFI" transmitters. The 500s audio is LOUD, BOOMING, and CRYSTAL CLEAR! IMO there's nothing that sounds better. Great job tracking down, and repairing your 500.
