Saya penggemar film dokumenter & film sejarah. Film letter from Iwo jima sdh saya tonton, di sini Sy menilai strategi kedua belah pihak AS & Jepang sdh berimbang, tetapi dari pihak Jepang dlm film tsb, ada yg mengarahkan utk bunuh diri masal sehingga mengurangi kekuatan Jepang secara cepat, padahal bila mampu bertahan hidup tdk bunuh diri & kekuatan di organisir kembali dengan strategi perang gerilya maka bisa di mungkinkan mengurangi korban tentara jepang

It is a moving experience to be there. I had the pleasure of going there when we transported members of a MAG there when our unit was deployed to Guam as part of the Enduring Freedom air bridge.

My deep honor and respect to all the men...those who died and those who lived. I am a Vietnam veteran myself. But this battle was needless and not at all strategic at this stage of the war. Even a Marine Corps General expressed a desire to go passed it, and starve out the Japanese defenders. There was no natural water source on Iwo. After a week of no water they would have become incapable of resisting. Besides, by then B29's were flying over it without having to stop and refuel anyway. The Japanese no longer had much of an air force, so there was no need for P51 fighter cover. Most of the "island hopping" strategy late in the war was the same scenario. Many top brass wanted to bypass the islands and attack Japan from China, which of course was much closer. They relented to MacArthur who swore that he "would return" to the Philippines. In order to make this happen and stroke Douglas' ego, they had to island hop so he liberate the people there. Again, not to diminish the sacrifice made by all those gallant men, but as a Vietnam vet we realized that the people at the top have a hidden agenda, and those of us at the bottom were fodder. Island hopping at the end of the war made as much sense as us taking the same hill twice during Nam.

The airfield there. Motoyama #4. Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone died a few steps away from it. I knew nothing of Sgt Basilone until I saw his name on a road sign at Camp Pendleton. I got curious and looked up his name. What an extraordinary Marine!

My father and 2 of his 3 brothers fought in the Pacific Theater, his brothers were killed in WW II and my father was badly wounded (he eventually received a 100% disability rating from the VA). It would take nearly 50 years before he was able to talk much about what he saw while fighting on the islands. Many nights he was scared to death that he would not see the sun rise the next morning. He joined a branch of The Last Man and was one of the last men to pass, at age 95. He would often tell the story about how when he went to enlist in The Navy the line was too long, so he went over and joined The Marine Corps.

1378 killed and 3600 wounded EVERY WEEK whilst that battle was being fought, and that was just US casualties. Fairly sure no movie would ever do that campaign justice.

I have pics of Iwo Jima from 1988 when we did beach ops there MSSG-15 on a West Pac. Took some black sand home in a Tabasco sauce bottle from an MRE still have the sand at home. Remember acres of machine gun shells and the sulfer smell and hot ground. Found a skull, gas mask rifle under sand on the beach and crawled in the tunnels. Place must have been hell for our brave men. Good thing they were not libtards back then or we would have lost the war today Biden and the anti American dems want out servicemen playing with transgender barbie/Ken dolls.

Believe it or not the actual beach that the landings were made on are now about 20' higher than they were on the invasion day due to volcanic activity. The volcano on this island is considered a top 10 to erupt soon. Hard to believe men fought as long, hard and sacrificed as much as they did on this hunk of inhospitable rock.

Iwo Jima was bought and paid for in blood. NEVER, should have been returned to the Japanese. They started a war and we finished it. Yes they're our friends and allies now, Iwa Jima should have been kept as a US property. Too much blood was spilt purchasing that Island.

My father was one of the Seabees that built the memorial. He had photos that were taken of it during construction. He also managed to get one of the rocks that was stacked against the flag home. We gave the photos, the rock, and a lot of other stuff he got off the island to the Nimitz museum years ago.
