Las chinampas llevaban construyendose cientos de años, si no es que miles, antes de que los aztecas llegaran al valle de Mexico, ellos simplemente aprendieron la tecnica y la reprodujeron para levantar Tenochtitlan.

I've noticed almost all the faces of the figures are obscure or destrctive-like. Are these originally intended or destroyed by later people?

Funny... Jaguars arent indigenous to the area... maybe we should call the "aztecs" by their real name
@ARTSQ_channelАй бұрын
We are all for using Mexica over Aztecs yet most people are still only familiar with the latter-always a struggle to find that balance. In a longer video, that’s always a useful thing to unpack though!

Thanks for sharing! This painting and your commentary reminds me of "Casa Tomada" and "Bestiario", two short stories written by Mexican novelist Julio Cortázar, where houses seemed to be normal at first, became weird and haunted by unknown creatures at last.
@ARTSQ_channel3 ай бұрын
Magical surrealism and surrealism absolutely share things in common! So the Cortázar connection totally makes sense. Thanks for the comment!

More fun fact, by using terracotta replica, Chin was one of the first dynasty that did not participate servants ritual suicides in monarch and nobility funerals. Of course, apart from the fact that Chin's son ordered to execute all craftmen and worker that build the tumb to keep it's location a secret.
@ARTSQ_channel3 ай бұрын
So we can describe the terracotta soldiers as a surrogate army for the afterlife, serving the same function as a real army. According to the historian Sima Qian, in addition to the laborers/artisans, Qin Shi Huang’s consorts who did not have sons also went to the grave with him.

Why are the soldiers actually there

To protect and serve the spirit of China’s First Emperor in the afterlife. He actually created an entire microcosm of his empire underground for the spirit world.
