Sorry that I’ve come late to this. Wonderful scenery, but why do we suffer this constant music. It’s so wearing! Are there no natural sounds?

I have done much better work since abandoning Instagram. Initially it freed me to focus on my own vision without wondering about engagement and approval. I still want to share, so my next step was start a newsletter on Ghost. I don't get as many views, but I get feedback and I post/publish images that are (as) ready (as I can make them) for publication. Then, about three months ago, I bought a good printer. That was the game changer. I now work on a physical end product. I see differently as I shoot and as I edit. "Status" is harder to come by, but when the feedback comes, it's real. I think (others will be better judges) my photography has improved. IG as a marketing tool? maybe. But let's be clear: when I post on IG I am working for Meta and I may have lost exclusive ownership of my work. All "social" media is about capturing my attention. I am the product. Life is too short.

Yep, I deleted everything…instagram, my KZbin channel, and even my website and blog. I was actually getting pretty good website traffic for being 100% organic searches from google. I love and hate the decision. I can finally go back to shooting what I want to shoot and when I feel like it (harder now with winter times and a new job schedule) but now only my siblings and few friends see my work. But it was nice on a recent trip to Joshua Tree on not looking for the “bangers” and I assume that will carry on an upcoming revisit to Iceland

maaaan im really considering getting the 5 now... what lenses would you recommend. Ive heard that the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 is good, however its quite big. Do you recommend some smaller lenses for travel?

Agree mostly with what you said but geez not everyone bought a leica to hang around the neck. As a leica user, I found that a bit offensive since there is a place and time for every camera. We all enjoy the art of photography and we buy what we could afford. :) I love shooting street with the M, though there is time when I m going out w gf and travel and have to baby sit her and the dogs and the ricoh gr coming in handy and hence i m here. Anyway enjoy ur video though, just my though 🥳

The 'transferable, sub-license' makes Instagram a non-starter for me (I am just a hobbyist). I do wonder what professionals feel about the terms and conditions of the service.

A lot on there are more salespeople than photographers. They are there to sell you the preset, their book, course, affiliate links, patreon, or workshop and less about their actual photography. So they don’t 100% care if they no longer retain full rights to their photos because if it generates them some clicks and revenue now they are fine with it.

I take pictures and rarely I dare to call the shot a photograph. The same applies for me publishing on the net. I'm in it for me and not for the admiration of others.

I recently deleted instagram. It was affecting how I shoot and perceive my work. I have a lot to learn in photography, using instagram damaging my learning experience. I want to connect properly with photography and consume it in a different way than staring at a screen. 🙏🏾

As an amateur photographer, the results from the camera must inspire me and the UI of the camera must not get in the way. That is why I chose Fujifilm. I don't want to edit. I want to take photos and enjoy the process of taking those photos. Back in the film days, you had to make your choices up front: camera, film, lens, shutter speed, aperture, composition -- then you lived with the choices you made. I want my digital photography experience to be similar.

I found the video and discussion to be insightful. Genres and sub-genres often exhibit significant tribalism, leading to biases against other genres. These biases stem from ill-informed specialization, which reflects an insecure perspective-my two cents.

Really fantastic artists open up entirely new understandings of beauty and invite the viewer to see differently. There is so much interesting, experimental work that has been done and is being done around the world, by artists exploring what their mediums can be and do. I keep saying in various photography groups, which are at least a tiny bit open-minded, that one of the best things ANY aspiring photographer can do is study THE HISTORY OF ART, *and* the history of photography. What we get on KZbin, most social media groups, and certainly any site primarily commercially focused is so severely limited, narrow, and just uninformed about art in general. Nothing at all wrong with commercial or any kind of photography; I want to make that clear. But anyone would benefit from seeing what is possible, what some mind-blowing innovators have done through time, in particular ones who want to discover how the medium can change what we think “seeing” even is, what pictures even are, who give us new eyes. I come from an MFA background in poetry, btw. I’m an amateur (very, very amateur) photographer, but the arts intersect in so many cool ways. The same issues apply regarding bubbles. Some people who want to write poetry think of greeting card verse as the definition of the art. That’s perfectly fine, but there is such a gloriously vast world of poetry beyond that, it’s sad if people don’t allow themselves a taste, or if the culture around them discourages exploration, which I think it very much does. I’m only just now studying photography, and have a long way to go, but I’m doing it as kind of supplement to writing, because I know from experience that different arts can feed each other, and sometimes my writing goes a bit dry. It helps to pick up a different medium.

I urge KZbin/insta/ photographers to go to school. If you don't know who Walker Evans or Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene Atget, or Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen or Paul Strand, Lee Miller or Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange or Margaret Bourke-White were, then you should take some formal education in your chosen field. What you are describing as "bubbles'" are styles or focuses of photography. A class in the history of photography is important to have any understanding of what you are personally doing. Where do you fit in the history and the Art of Photography? You can't really know what it is that you are doing without some perspective of not only what your contemporaries are doing but also what photographers who came before you did and how it relates to your work. It will make your work more relatable, and more meaningful to you and others who work with you, and work around you.

Very insightful, Brian and excellent advice, especially for young or photographers struggling with their 'style'. I can relate to your changing your focus and understanding over the years from a beginning with a more 'narrow' approach. I've been striving to expand from conventional landscapes, as you well describe here, for over 40 years, and only now, at 65, I sense that I've found a more original focus to my images that works for me. I also am now feeling much better about my work, and that all the effort is again paying off in satisfaction. In summary, opening up to other ways of seeing and creating cannot be underestimated. Thanks for your insights!

I know this is really old post buthope ypu get this. What camera do you use the sony 24-105 on? Since this is 7 years old you obviously aren't using the 7RV. I just moved from Sony A-mount DSLT (A99M2 and A77M2) to A7RV. I have lots of A-mount lenses so I purchased the LA-EA5 to use my A-mount lenses until I can afford to start buying E-mounts. I purchased this lens as my first E-mount because it complements my sony 70-400mm G2 very well. At some point I will replace 70-400mm G2 A-mount with the 200-600mm FE5.6-6.3. I will still probably keep the 24-105 and use it on APS-C mode since the 7RV has 61MP sensor. Oh yeah, I enjoyed the sensible review. Thanks

@@BrianLackeyThanks! Good to know. Makes me want to look up your earliest videos now for comparison 😊 BYW, so grateful for your words in a recent video about excess editing. One of the most beautiful features of your work to me is the utterly natural-looking final product. The amped-up stuff all over social media, pics that make landscapes look neon and shrill or shellacked or something, hurt my eyes! lol It’s like they are straining after beauty, or going past beauty into sentimentality &…I don’t know what. Hotel wall art?
