I climbed that with my brother in the 90s. Picked up some old gloves from the pile at the base. The climb really makes you respect where you are in real time. Losing focus equals death. Before climbing the cables i accidentally wondered off the trail on my way up the base part. I drifted to the right and much lower than where i should have been. I suddenly found my self in a serious situation. I began to slide backwards on my feet, the decomposed granite on the steep slope was very slippery, the further i slide the steeper it got. I squatted down and clawed at the granite with my figer tips and somehow managed to stop the slide. From there after stabilizing myself I began to climb back up, inch by careful inch until i got back on stable ground. All the time this was going on, I just assumed that if i continued to fall that i would drop maybe 5 feet into some brush and that would scratch me up. When i turned around to see where I was, all i saw was the Yosemite valley as far as the eye could see. Where i stopped my slide was just before the point of a vertical drop of 800 to 1,000 feet onto a huge pile of boulders. I could have died that day. I am thankful that i dudnt know what was behind me when i was there. The ignorance was life saving.

The park service reportedly discourages the use of harnwsses and double lanyards because it slows the line of climbers. Really, they should reduce the number of lottery places further and require successful completion of a training course in using the harness with double lanyards. Also needing certified completion of a series of less dangerous, gradually more difficult climbs would weed out all but the serious clinbers. I wush the girl who died in July had had the chance to live long enough to truly make a bucket list.
