It doesn't seem like it has much range. Is that just the camera compensation?

I had a USA version of lights similar to these when I was younger, they had a green cord and the lamps were not 'extended' out of the main cord; they were wired in like a regular mini light set. Ours were not multi-function and just ran off of straight 120V with no transformer needed. Sadly they died several years ago (I imagine a bulb burned out and broke the circuit) and I was never able to find another set.

Great video - wonderful lights! LEDs are the devil. There's no wasted heat in most British houses, the hot bulbs contribute to the comfort!

Well, Noma tried, and they are quite pretty - just not right. Thanks for the video. The curse of outsourcing QC to the customer strikes, of course. Return them to the seller for replacement. (In fact, I would take off one cap of each color and return the set for replacement: then, if the replacement set has missing caps, you can fix them and keep them.)

These are great for the price but i have a friend who used to use these long term due to mobility issues and the remotes do break eventually. Now you've tried these honestly give smart plugs a try, believe it or not they are more reliable long term and you can literally turn your lights off from your phone or by voice. My friend even walks into his kitchen and says 'make me a cup of tea' and his kettle fires up, the relays easily take 3kw. You don't even need an Amazon alexa as the phone app is more than sufficient. 4 plugs cost about 30 quid but they're well worth it.

These are great i have a couple. I also bought an in-line dimmer and made my own cable with wagos on the end so you can connect a few sets of vintage lights to it at once without the plugs. I put 80 lights on my tree, a set in the window and one set above the fireplace all connected to the same dimmer and it works really well (still under the 300w limit). Then plug that into a smart plug and all you need to say is 'switch on christmas' and voila, lights are on. Running at a lower power you hardly have any bulb failures too.

The fuse bulb can be anywhere in the string. The 20 bulb sets do run rather hot which means the lacquer fzdes quickly, nit sucb a problem with 40 bukb (6 volr) sets. Best adiuce us to use a dimmer in the circuit to underrun them. Nice set.

Awesome, yeah I did think they got a little hot! Got a dimmer on the way! Cheers

Ive got an older set of these which are LED. They have thick cable like incandescent lights and the leds are colored to each shade (only red green and blue though), they're not warm or anything but quite a well made set. It seems like they really cheap out on materials and build quality these days which is sad.
@alstden8 күн бұрын
Thats a very interesting sounding set to be fair. And seems everything is getting cheaper and built worse these days sadly..
@jordanwaeles10 күн бұрын
It's funny, I don't remember incandescents being this dim for green and blue... Is that because most of the blue light is blocked by the phosphor coating of the LED chips, leaving very little blue to pass through the cap? Turns out it's not as simple as slapping a plastic cap on a warm white LED, there is some more engineering required to get it just right!
@alstden8 күн бұрын
From what people have said about the blues and green being dimmer and not overpowering like with LED sets I thought this too. But my filament set of nome belles has really bright blues and greens! I think the big issue really is all down the the colour spectrum and what led's (even high quality whites) cant emit. Filament bulbs emit a full spectrum of colour whereas LEDss emit a small part of it. Or one spike of each colour in the case of the multi LED sets. They would need to make a super high quality phosphor on an LED to help emit each wave length. It's all very complicated and hard to break down into details... lol
@trevorhaddox68842 күн бұрын
VintaGlo has solved this with high CRI phosphor LEDs, but they are pretty expensive though (like $25USD per set of 50 last time I heard of them). The knockoffs don't have the good phosphor are a bit dim and sickly (or worse, they just use monochrome LEDs)

I keep searching for power banks that don't shut off with low current draw - but I don't think it's a big selling feature.
@alstden8 күн бұрын
They are hard to find. cheap ones that hold a single 18650 cell can often be good. It defo is not a selling feature though you are right!

I bought some 40 bulb sets of these in that box design in 1999.

Thats awesome! So my guess was around the right time! Not quite vintage but cool and retro all the same. Thanks for letting me know!

I found the circuit copes with the extra voltage fine, I suppose with some new alkaline batteries the voltage would be close to 5 anyway. You struggle to just cut the lead off the lights and power them directly as they are usually pulsed at a higher voltage by whatever circuit wizardry is going on in the box. If i want to power a few strings of bottle lights or something that are powered by button cells you can buy a buck converter from eBay to lower the voltage down then you can solder the usb lead to it and adjust it accordingly for them.
@alstden12 күн бұрын
It seems to yes, I have a set that must be 6 or more years old that I did this to, and still works to this day after heavy use. The buck converters are a really good idea. Cheap, simple and you can adjust the brightness of the set if ever you fancy!

I collect old Christmas lights (since I was 10, I'm 41 now) but here in the USA we don't have a "fuse bulb" in the light string, our plug itself has a dual 3 amp fuse in it. But I love the old lights, the nice warm glow the only thing is they got rid of the yellow bulbs and put orange in it's place because people were complaining that the yellow bulb was too bright for the string of lights.
@alstden12 күн бұрын
You must have an epic collection then! I think the fuse bulb in our sets are just to protect the bulbs, as we get the usual fuse in the plug that should be 3A (although easy to swap with a 13.. or a screw..) Agree you cant beat that warm glow, and I did wonder why the set had orange and not yellow, to be honest they still impress me just how bright they are, but in a good way not a harsh led eye hurting way.
@chrislewis226212 күн бұрын
@@alstden Yes I have a very large collection of them, like 14 totes of them. I love the old stuff, I have a bunch of the LED stuff but they have gotten better with toning the extreme brightness back a bit.
