Laying the first layer, says keep it level, if your laying it direct to concrete with no mortar between fail to see how that's achievable.

Retaining walls are the silent heroes of the architectural world. They have they shittiest job("Reject this dirt's right to obey the laws of gravity") and they do it with nary a complaint. Whenever I contemplate my place in this world, I ask myself: What would a retaining wall do?

I think this video is specifically for gravity walls that rely on their own weight, i.e. non-reinforced, up to 1.25 metres high. There is a separate method for reinforced walls above 1.25 metres high. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5vcqIaGrbqreKM

NOT pea gravel! as it is round and will not pack causing wall blow out. Always use a washed crushed gravel 3/4" is usually recommended.
