My mom died this month. She was tough to love. I disappointed her & we let each other down. All I ever wanted was for her to truly value me. After a lifetime of working hard for approval & affection, I was able to then see it wasn’t my fault. It was her tragic inability to go of control & deeply love another. With this understanding, and in her passing, a mutual lifetime of pain & shame were released. Mama, u gave me my love of music, literature & the arts. With this gift, u gave me a world that finally made sense. When it’s my time, please Mama, be there….with Grandma & Grandpa to welcome me Home. Till then, I’ll keep loving u. Forever & Always Amen. The emotion in this song is just gut wrenching. Steve is brilliant and Emmy lifts the song to celestial levels with her harmony. Together they are just heart-breaking. The harmonica and Violin add such a haunting feel. A fantastic arrangement. Such a pleasure to have such simple yet, fantastic music.

Steve Earle, with all due recpect to his work, sucks big time here. Even Anna Ternheim, the Sweedish singer who sang Goodbye infront of Emmylou on Polar prize tribute to E. Harris, did it very, very good. (please, check the video) Steve Earle picks gutiar too loud. That just don't fit to this particular tune. Fullstop.That's the first. And his singing stile, almost talking...short sang words....like he's to lazy to strech the word into melody just a bit. He destroyed and excellent tune. Even poor Emmylou who juped in cound't help much. Like cleaning the stadium with a tooth bursh. By the way, Goodbye is on of my many EH favorites. Adoore it. Probably that's the reason why I react like this.
