How many of these cleans can you do before breaking the tabs & thereby permanently destroying the faders? Think I'll just stick with F5 thanks.

@kenwebster50537 ай бұрын
@@pjwhite42 OK, it is fine for a one time thing then, still risky though. I have opened pots & some other things years ago to clean them out. I try very hard not to do that anymore as I have found the risk of breakage is very high. So I tend to regard it as an absoute last resort after all else has failed. Usually squirting F5 into the faders & sliding up and down a few times brings then back to life. Assuming you blow free dust out with CO2 first of course. I would try to find some other peace of junk gear to canabolise parts from before opening up a componant in that way, becaus it's gone wrong for me a few times in the past. Usually I can do it the one time, maybe a 2nd time but a 3rd would be really pushing it. It's not really intended to be serviced in that way, those tabs can break off very easily.

@@crusingandbrusingtv3824 you may have gotten a switch stuck on. Did you attempt to remove any switch caps without removing the front panel circuit board? This is a common cause for bending the switch contact wires out of shape.

It could be original. Sync-to-tape was added at the factory on later models. And cables were usually either blue or gray.

It's amazing in this day and age that people can share helpful information for vintage gear like this. Thank you very much! I feel most of it would have been obvious to me, but little helpful details are always welcome. I hope I can find someone who has had problems with the noise my DX is making so I can fix that as well, without fumbling about blindly as I normally do with this sort of repair.

I'm also looking to get rid of a high pitch sound and noise on my DX. My suspicion is that the 470uF caps on the output have failed after 40 years (based on a similar problem with a mixer I had years ago), but I'm just an amateur. Do you have any advice or guidance?
@pjwhite422 жыл бұрын
Does the noise go away after triggering all drums? There is a known problem with EPROMs that have widely different values in the first two address locations, but only right after powering up the machine, before the first trigger event.

Hey Paul I have another question about the DMX potentiometers , how would I go about using deoxit fader with those. Just dissemble like shown with cardboard underneath and deoxit? Or would it be too risky and there be too much overspray and drip. First time doing this wanna be cautious if it’s doable. Appreciate you .
@pjwhite423 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tried this, but if you can direct the spray into the fader through the dust cover slot and catch any drips, it could work. Maybe try it on one fader first before doing all of them. Just don’t use anything like WD-40 or other oily substance.
@bryceheffinger88953 жыл бұрын

Wow, this is the best way to destroy those switches in the long run. Simply use a fibre pen like the Ecobra 730 300 to easily get the silver oxidation off without completely ruining the silver plating like you do.

After watching, I really don't think his method is that big of a deal. Will these switches wear out after a while? Yup. But probably after several repairs and probably decades of use. Anyone still wanting to use it will just have to source new parts, which will probably be 3D printed in 10 minutes by then. Not a big deal.

Hey Paul White, I have a question regarding my oberheim DMX midi. I just got it the other day and for some reason everything works except the recording function. When I hold record and click play it stays on the “count - - 4” and doesn’t count down at all. However when I enter beats in the step sequence it retains the sounds but I can’t play them back . Any ideas of what this issue is ?

@pjwhite425 жыл бұрын
J M this happens if the first two bytes on the EPROM are not the same value, or at least close. If you reprogram the first two bytes to zero, you can fix the problem. You can do this with a device programmer without erasing the chip.
