Satday afters I always had a 'Walk up Road' and as I woz mekin' me way towords St Georges Road I would always have a few on the way. Me old Gran used to always ask me pop into Mallory's & pick up...a Gallon of Pink Paraffin...a Donkey Stone for the front step & a couple of new Gas Mantles...(one for the parlour & one for the cat) an' then on the way ome' I'd pop back into all the pubs that I'd visited on the way there only stoppin' at Boyes's for a piss before I rolled up at me Grans for a nice plate of samiches an' pickled onions to share with me Gran & me aunty Maud. Them were the days an all !

Brilliant bit of history! There’s another Star & Garter vintage pub in Manchester (Fairfield Street near Picadilly train station), famous as TV film set for “Brassic”!! Has regular live music upstairs mostly heavy punk type bands.

If we heard them coming down Spyvee street, we would have knocked round all the neigbours and gathered a big enough bag of rags to earn a balloon by the time they got to Egton Street. :)

I’ve met this guy Russell Boyce in 2004 in London. Illustrating pubs today is important because a lot of them are disappearing as are local police stations. I love this type of documentary work & you can go all over the world but the essence you feel in your local community is something else & that is also a subjective argument of what is local.

I'm from Suffolk, but worked in Hull in the late '70s. Great times with folk who made me so welcome, and the pubs well, fantastic including this one I remember well! There was also one (I think) called The Zooilogical? Stood alone with surrounding buildings knocked down, great boozer I guess sadly long gone, anyway, thanks for some great memories there and thank you people of Hull!

Yes the Zoo. Fantastic pub that was propped by wooden beams and sold a great pint of mild. It’s now the site of the Hull Daily Mail offices, I think, assuming the Hull Daily Mail is still there.

Aw Russell, just discovered you. This takes me back to my own childhood here in Scotland. Im nearly 60 and we had a ragbone man in the 60s. I remember getting a baloon or a multi coloured ball. And we thought this was fantastic. How kids have changed. Offer a baloon now and you'd end up wearing it!. Happy days. Its great for you folks in Hull, that you still have your Rag n bone man. Keep up the good work auld yin. Theres 25 years left in you yet! Take care all
