I don’t EVER ill wish anyone, but oh Hector, I know that when your jealous “comrades” were being judged by the Ultimate Judge, they realised that the person speaking on their behalf was you! Godbless.

What a tear jerker , fantastic rendition of this tune from one of my favourite Scottish composers, Scott Skinner, so much soul went into his airs, his strathspeys are a joy to dance to. Wonderful interpretation of it.

Really do not like with this overdosed Hector the Hero performance...

I agree with the comments about the tin whistle player, but hey ,the sound guy got it so wrong also! Break that whistle in two and you know where to stuff it into the two offenders!!!

Being a Piper for over 45 years and loving Hector the Hero listening this rendition is a real tear jerker. I love Hector the Hero and am in the process of learning the tune as it is about one of the best military men ever and it is a real tragedy his fellow officers laid some allegations against without any proof.

Another great tune spoiled by that clown on the tin whistle!

If you don;t like the arrangement, then direct your comments at the arranger, not to individual members of the orchestra who have to follow the arrangement and the conductor.
@DavidLovrien7 жыл бұрын
The over-embellishment improvised by the player, the failure of the sound tech to balance the whistle within the orchestra, and the dirge-like tempo are much more to blame than the arranger for this massive fail.

This tune is a lament, it's supposed to have a dirge-like tempo.

I agree, don,t shoot the tin whistle player he is doing a great job

WAY, way, way too much of the flute or tin whistle, or whatever it is! Sorry, but it just completely spoils that beautiful song, especially with the massive overdose of the silly, flowery racing around the notes all over the shop before (maybe) playing the correct note. Poor effort, Andre.
@Pete824516 жыл бұрын
At least if he had played the tune 'straight', the tin whistle can be beautiful, but all those squiggles and swirls--reminds me of black American women who ruin everything they try to sing

Agreed. Too clever by half.

Agreed. I usually love Andre Rieu’s music but this has to be the worst rendition of this beautiful tune, spoilt by the ridiculous whistle. Without that it would be wonderful. There seems to be little appreciation of the solemnity of this lovely tune. Listen to Gary Innes’ version instead.
@patiolis5 жыл бұрын
Also try Wolfstone’s version which captures the true sensitivity of this emotional tune without feeling the need to show off (as in the case of the tin whistler) but shows far greater respect for this lovely tune.

@@patiolis Already done. I agree- it is much more sensitive. Another case of "less is more".

Brought tears to my eyes too, but not in a good way. Do they not know Hector's story when arranging this once beautiful tune?

I had heard rumour of there being a special Scottish element to the 2012 concert and this proves it for me, wonderful, and I am very much a fan of Hector the Hero :) I only wish they did the same or similar in 2013 rather then jus wheeling out the used at every concert Amazing Grace (I may have to do some lobbying via Murisia!)

Hi Killic, I've no problem with you using the information I placed on your video clip. Thanks very much for giving us the clips of André's SECC concert, especially this one. We have so much beautiful Scottish music mostly unheard in the wider world. I was so pleased that André took the trouble to arrange 'Hector the Hero' and, along with the Lomond and Clyde Pipe Band, play it so beautifully. He could have chosen one of the more generally known tunes associated with Scotland, but didn't.

Cheers everyone for your lovely comments and especially to Robert L. Watson for the useful piece of information, if you don't mind I will share it on the description, I'm also very pleased that the band (Lomond and Clyde Pipe Band) liked the video.

This is a beautiful piece of music, I have never heard it before. Andre has captured it's poignancy perfectly. Bravo!

Fantastic rendition of 'Hector the Hero', composed by that great Scotsman 'Strathspey King', James Scott Skinner for his friend and Scottish national hero, General Hector Macdonald of the Gordon Highlanders, who died tragically in Paris in 1903. André did a terrific job of interpreting the poignancy of the tune. Should make a record of it.
