My pilot was Larry Sustrick (sp) when I was in A trp for my first tour. I couldn't find him in the VHPA database. If anybody has contact with him, I would love to say hello to him before it's too late for either of us. My wife tells me I'm no 'spring chicken' anymore, lmao. God Bless all who fought in that terrible war, and fuck the hippies that spit on us when we came home and accused us of starting the war...damn hippies.

sorry to hear of viola's death. i so enoyed her birthday parties on youtube. my great grandma played in her band for about 2 years. she played trumpet. her name was magaret frey. she grew up in cresco. iowa. when she married, she quit the band. she settled in mt. calvary, WI because she met my great grandpa milton huberty while playing there as viola's band travelled the midwest. this would be about 1929 - 1931 approx. when margaret frey played in viola's band. so then margaret frey huberty became the mt. calvary band leader for years, along with giving lessons, and was the organist and choir director for Holy Cross Catholic parish in mt. calvary until about the early to mid 60s. May viola smith rest in peace. she surely had a darling personality.

@@michaeljoseph2303 that's funny! i recall watching a documentary which interviewed twelve centenarians years ago and they basically all had the same advice to longevity and that was to never give up and never quit. One world war 1 vet said 'life is like driving on the road, the road is smooth for a long while and then you start hitting a rough patch of bumps in the road and you ask yourself when will this stop? but you just keep right on going and then all of a sudden the road gets smooth again' 'that's what life is' good advice i think

Viola Smith the lady Gene Krupa. I think about all the great times she spent with the big bands and small groups. Her technique was enviable. I loved the way she drummed. So much to gain to listen to Viola. I also liked the fact that she did not play Four Straight Beats on the Bass Drum. She could adlib and play like a Louie Bellson or Cozy Cole without pounding steady four beats on the bass drum. Thanks to Viola for making a lot of drummers aware of her ability. thank you Viola.

The lady Gene Krupa. She was so well respected during the big band era and after the big band era. She really showed a lot of drummers the Right Way of playing using dynamics reading all the musical charts. I can still see the ads in down beat magazine with her picture endorsing a set of drums. Much honor will always go to Viiola Smith for her expertise in the world of percussion. thank you many many times Viola.

Well it's been 51 years since I was over there. I went over on the USS walker across the pacific with the squadron. I was the commo chief for A Troop. We were stationed at Camp Enari. I only had 6 months left when they sent me. I left in March of 1968! I still remember like it was yesterday, however the faces are slowly fading away. If anyone remembers me from those days leave a reply and your e-mail so we can touch base!

@@ronsellew5696 Hey Ron, he was deployed on October 28th of 67’ his nickname was “Scotty” Walker A Troop 7/17th. I’ve got in contact with Charles Rayl, I don’t know if that rings a bell. My grandfather was a scout pilot in an OH-6A if that helps!

Yes it does help, I remember the name associated with the scouts. I believe he was a warrant officer because we addressed them as Mr, Walker The officers had their own section where they sleot so the only interaction would have been casual. My job was to take care of the communications of the troop. I also put up the power lines in the troop area trained radio operators and a few times flew door gunner if needed. If you have a picture of him u could send it might be helpful.
