This talk could not have come at a better time for me. I have battled with depression my whole life. No one has ever explained I’m the reasons or the solutions so clearly. Thank you, Ajahn Brahm! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I've referred this to many people with early signs of depression. Which helped them. Bless you Ajhan Brahm. May your nirvanic journey be short and peaceful

This video literally saved my life. I owe everything I have to it.
The causes AB lists are totally provident in the world today. His words have helped me greatly. I realized how very fault finding I have always been. Our society contributes with the constant seeking for more, perfection, money, prestige. A wonderful teaching from this wonderful man.

I have watched many talks on this subject with the hope that it will help me, sometimes they do, but I can only say that this talk is the best ever that speaks about me. I am so pleased to have found it, or I believe I was meant to. I am going to play this again and again. This is a description of life and how it tricks your mind into negative thoughts. I hope this talk helps others as it has helped me.

I started listening to Ajahn Brahm talks since 2003 because I discovered my body slipped into severe depression after diagnosis from a doctor. I never even know what major depression was! I couldn’t get out of bed, extreme fatigue, constipated, slept through the day but was fine at night, etc. On top of the illness I was feeling guilty about not being able to go to school, letting my parents down etc. His talks helped me deal with the illness and gave me room and space to recover. Over the years, I continue to have relapses and recently it worsened to the point I started being very suicidal. Even at my worst I remember this too will pass. And ajahn brahm’s story about the tiger and snake so I took moments amidst losing my sanity to enjoy some honey. And persevered. With medication, rest and patience I bounced back out of that dark phase. Buddhist teachings really help me to accept this condition and continue to persevere using meditation, yoga, chanting etc. and medication of course. I tell my family that if it weren’t for this illness, I wouldn’t have started practising meditation. So something really good came out of this immense health challenge, as Ajahn Brahm said let the dung become manure so we can grow a sweet mango tree. It may continue to be my lifelong health challenge but now I’m full of faith that mindfulness and meditation can help me mitigate the symptoms. Also, nothing is certain! :) so much gratitude to the Buddha, Dhamma and sangha.

Great to hear from you! How are you doing now? Schooling good but not essential. The main thing is wisdom not information. Importance is moral values and meditation. There are many people who are illiterate but living good lives, better than a PhD professor. Good luck.

I really enjoyed your story 😂 I have found myself in similar health related problems leading to heart surgery and strokes . At my lowest point I would pray for these sufferings to come to an unnatural end . The teachings of Ahjun have put things into perspective and shown me that my pain and suffering is shared by all and that we ought to be compassionate to others but most if all to be loving and caring to ourselves. I am 66 and I am still learning. I hope all is well with you 😂

I liked this talk a lot but my only problem is, what if you are in a toxic or abusive relationship? Or with a partner that's extremely negative and not good for you? Shouldn't you try to change something like that?

*I want people to share this video to people who has depression. I depressed about my exam when I was in highschool. I studied hard but I failed again and again, it made me felt like I failure and I am a loser, i felt like I disappointed my grandmother but after I listened this. My mind were opened. I depressed because i hurting myself, I let my happiness go for this achievement and bring negative thoughts on myself. Finally I accepted that I failed my exam but in the end my grandmother not disappointed in me. She was happy to see me being happy, she knew that I focusing on sometimes that impossible and let go my happiness for achieving. She wasn't happy what I had been through. Now I realize that nobody perfect but it doesn't mean you have to follow perfection*

I think we need to stop using the word Depression for what is really malaise or ennui. Depression is a deadly disease that, untreated, will kill the host. We don't live in the Dark Ages anymore. We understand brain chemistry MUCH better in 2019 than even 2014, so go to a doctor first, learn meditation here second. Having "the blues" or a general malaise is NOT Depression. The blues will pass and you'll have longer time gaps between them. Depression creeps up then WHAM! hits you like a slip shot from a heavy weight. Over and over and all day long. It's hard to walk or talk, nevermind 'caring' about anything. You'll sleep the sleep of the dead, struggle to walk from room to room so: No kids,Depression and a mild existential crisis AIN'T the same animal. Take that depression to a doctor first BUT, come back to this channel BECAUSE.. Ajahn Brahm made an incredibly acute point when he mentioned that Depression is the result of a Mind that hasn't been given enough Rest & Recovery. Most people are not taught to even consider it. "Meditation!? You mean that shit patchouli wearing hippies do? What a bunch of b.s.. You're supposed to USE your mind not sit around letting mold grow on it FFS!" <- Sentiment I've heard personally 😂 I disagree strongly and concur with AB that it's the internal thinking thinking thinking and perpetual doing and planning and analysis and directing the future and disecting the past for years and years, that can lead to the brain getting too stressed and the mind never known. (I make a distinction) So, do what is healthier first(doctor) but don't be afraid to jump into this in the mean time, after, during any Rx period. Brahms a Master guide imo. I've heard other techniques, listened to different guides, etc etc. To me, no one beats Brahm when it comes to guiding. And, if you're running on fumes at times, it kinds of helps to have a guide, even if other Buddhists or retreat junkies think that means you're spiritually retarded or whatever. IDC. Anyway, cheers!
