I promised my .ate of 41 years that I would not put him inna hosptial agaimst his will...he had been an oncology nurse and had had many dying patients. When his charting was done he would go sit on his 7pm to 7am shift in the wee hours of the morning with the patients who had no visitors if they were awake....no family...he would sit and let them tell him of their lives...he told me of many of them....many knew they would never leave the hospital....he saw their physical suffering through surgeries and procedures...last ditch efforts he knew were futile. He asked me NOT to intervene should something like that be his eventual fate and we both had advance directives. That was in his 50s. When he was 79 he quit eating it was diagnosed as ulcers. I though it wasnt serious. He wanted to stay at home our doctor, a close freind did all sorts of tests as an outpatient and they did find ulcers yet the doctor said dont worry he will recuperate...he made our friend promise not to admit him involuntarily....he quit eating first and we tried supplements then he quit altogether and wouldnt drink anything....He knew as a RN that he could not last long without fluids...our friend came,attempted to install a feeding tube at home but my mate's stomach rejected the tube twice. The dr. arranged for the next morning time at the hospital to sedate him to install the tube under anesthesia then allow him to come home to be fed there . I slept next to him always...I reached over in the dark that night for his hand and it was cold in the middle of the night and I knew.....This was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life.....to allow him to NOT have all,sorts of extraordinary means against his will....he talked about this many times...almost as if he knew it would be his end decades before. His mother had been diagnosed with digestive issues and had surgery she didnt leave the hospital alive and she woke up evrery morning there asking why her husband had not respected her advance orders to not have surgery....she was in severe emotional distress the entire time as soon as she came up from the tranquilizing drugs she was given..... There IS no perfect answer....do we intervene do we honor the person's wishes? Is it a betrayal to notmhonor their wishes? He had turned 80 the month before but I was totally unprepared for this. One would think talkimg as a health care professional and a clinical psychologist, which I am that it would be different....IT JUST ISNT. This was an amazing film and story on so MANY levels.

A very believable film of human courage. Please bring us more of this quality.
