Pull the Chöke all the way out every time when the engine is cold. Just start off right off the bat with full chöke. It won't hurt the bike. My Honda CM450 (and tractors / lawnmowers / chainsaws / weedwackers) are the same way. Full chöke to start when cold. All older engines (and small engines) are pretty much the same way, you need to choke them to start when the engine is cold. The choke switch just moves a big plunger in the carb that restricts air flow, so the fuel to air ratio is higher (rich). You can push the chöke once it's warming up to a point where it idles nicely. After a few minutes or miles down the road, push the chöke all the way back in. If you should forget to push it back in, it's not harmful, you're just burning more fuel than you need to to get down the road.

Interestingly, my 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit 750cc, which for all intents and purposes is pretty much the same basic Universal Japanese Vtwin bike like your Intruder (and also pretty red ;-) ), has a computer controlled CDI ignition to control the spark timing (which the old bikes or engines don't have), but still old carbs. I rarely have to chöke it. It has has temperature sensor feedback to the computer, and the CDI computer box must adjust the spark timing when cold to give one the best chance of starting it, because I don't think the computer can control the fuel flow or chöke. Maybe there's a circuit and servo to add some choke that is controlled by the computer... I have yet to work on the bike, so I don't know yet. So on newer bikes, or bikes with fuel injection, you may have to choke them far less often, and maybe on even newer bikes, where everything is computer controlled to a fuel mapping chart, never at all. The next year 2008 on my model they switched to fuel injection also controlled by the computer instead of a carb... and a person probably never has to chöke that bike at all. ~ I had to add an umlaut to the word chöke to bypass the YT comment censor because YT keyword filters thought maybe I was advocating chöking people. I know, daft :-p Don't spell it with an ö.
@dysnomia-anarchiaКүн бұрын
People could be hesitant to chöke an engine, because with living things, chöking, is a bad thing (TM) and has negative connotations. But on engines, although you are restricting the air flow, its a bit of a different thing and not per say bad. The extra fuel vapor of a rich condition actually evaporates and absorbs more heat inside the cylinder and thereby cools it down more by absorbing more heat, allowing more oxygen density and more power. Cooler running, more power... the same thing adding nitros oxide does, but on a much smaller scale. But running an engine with choke always on is an unnecessarily expensive way to run an engine. There's also water injection, used with supercharging or turbo charging, where a system injects water vapor in to do the same cooling function for boosting power. The water absorbs heat, converts to steam, and even kind of cleans your cylinders out. Some mechanics will hand bottle spray water into their car engine carb while the engine is running, to do the same function as sea foam, but on the cheap. Kind of like a steam cleaning of your cylinder heads. I picked up a lot of engine knowledge, by watching a lot of YT videos, when I had small engines that just were not working for me and I had to figure out why :-)

Not a thing you want near a place where you are feeling around for the petcock when your fuel cuts out. 500cc is all you need and the perfect size imho, once you get up to 750 you're just burning gas to have acceleration on tap.

I have a question if don't mind. Mine i got used and I'm still working on servicing it. It's a it's the 1987 vs700 and I was wondering about the lights or lack of them such a fuel gauge. But my question is should it show when it's in neutral etc? Or is some of my lights out? When I start it or turn the key on it shows the 2 red lights and that's all. Thanks for all your help so far
@SteelCowGirl4EverАй бұрын
@@Undying_Presents I would say you've definitely got some lights out that aren't showing on the little black box under your handlebars. If it's in neutral, a (green square with an N in the middle) should be lighting up. One of the red squares will mean your temperature is high and that your radiator will be kicking on if it's liquid cooled. Most bikes don't come with a fuel gauge. There are a few exceptions out there. But when you go to fuel up, (always reset the odometer back to zero). I'm not sure what the tank capacity is for the 700. But I would say when it reaches 90, hit the pump and fuel up, but don't forget to reset the odometer back to zero again. That is what I've been doing with all of my bikes for decades. And I've never found myself stranded. If you do end up stranded, flip the valve under your tank to (reserve), and that should be enough to get you to a fuel station. But now you know the secret to keeping track of your fuel mileage. Rest assured, that bulbs are a fairly easy replacement. But sometimes, wiring can be the culprit of faulty lights, or lights that don't come on at all. Anyway, I hope that helps! The best of luck, and you'll have to keep me updated!
@Undying_PresentsАй бұрын
@@SteelCowGirl4Ever yeah that's helps alot I definitely have some lights out or wiring problem cos only the red lights light up. I'd like to be able to reset the odometer to zero but it doesnt have that option. It's just a straight up tachometer that shows only the entire mileage. So I have to watch how many miles I've gone and I gas up often. I'm gonna be working on that and changing the oil and filter on it. Thanks for replying you're always a big help when I can't find the answer and I appreciate it! Hopefully I'll eventually straighten everything out one thing at a time. Thanks alot - Jay @ #undyingpresents
@SteelCowGirl4EverАй бұрын
@@Undying_Presents Oh no problem! And absolutely you will! Don't try to take on one too many different tasks at once. It's all too easy to get overwhelmed when replacing different things. You might be able to get the type of tachometer that has the little knob you turn in order to reset the mileage. It shouldn't be very hard to find at all if the one you have might not work for you. They might actually make gauges that you can install as well. But you can definitely change the setup. An amp meter should be able to help you to determine what wire might be the cause of the issue. But also check the bulbs. Sometimes it's as simple as a shorted out bulb, or something making contact where it shouldn't. But definitely let me know if you run into any other riddles. Luckily they aren't too hard to figure out. But you definitely have a very good bike that with the right amount of care, will certainly take care of you right back!

@@Undying_Presents The crazy thing is, I went from a 250 to an 800, and then from an 800 to this 1400. So when I made a change, it was always a major leap that I wasn't really anticipating. (Circumstances were responsible for this more than anything else). Lol This one is a 98. So it's still in remarkably great shape. And I have to say, the bigger the engine, the smoother the ride. Unlike The 800 and the 250s, this bike is extremely comfortable for hours on end. You don't deal with that "numbness" after so many miles. The engine also tends to have a distinctively lower pitch.

But seafoam is extremely potent so you would have to dilute it or use very little. My favorite carb cleaner is "gum out." That seems to free up anything that might be sticking. And of course when you put it away for the winter time, always find a good fuel stabilizer so that the fuel that's still sitting inside your carburetor doesn't get all gooey.

@SteelCowGirl4Ever2 ай бұрын
@@Undying_Presents Definitely start with emptying what little fluid is left in the reservoir out with a turkey baster or an eyedropper. But do this very carefully. Also, exercise caution when removing the rubber diaphragm (so as not to tear it). If the fluid levels are that low, then it would stand to perfect reason why the clutch lever has no resistance, much to the same degree that when your brake fluid reservoir is low, or air gets into the lines, your brake lever is going to feel very soft and also have no resistance. Bleeding procedures are pretty much the same. The fact that most things on this particular bike are hydraulic, makes it a learning process. But it sounds to me like you have the right idea. Let me know if you run into any issues. But as you bleed the system, the clutch should start to stiffen up.

@@dishwas_her1160 Haha, no. It's all in good fun. I have a good time going on all those videos and talking myself up for the simple fact that I can prove and back everything I say. I had one 3 years and it was probably the best of the V twin motorcycles. Power everywhere, smooth running, fantastic sound and shaft driven. Brakes need improvement but it is not hard get done. The kicked out front end is fantastic on the road but can be a problem when low speed maneuvering in tighter spaces. I wish they had put another two gallons of fuel capacity in the tank. I found it had one really bad fault that depending where you ride you might not ever encounter. In hot weather with heavy stop and go traffic the hydraulic assisted clutch would boil the fluid. You was not going anywhere till it cooled.
@SteelCowGirl4Ever4 ай бұрын
I'm actually glad you gave me the heads up on that. So far I've never had that happen to me. But that doesn't mean it couldn't at some point. The brake's definitely could use a little bit of tweaking. I'm not particularly used to having both a front and rear disc. To be honest, I like the rear drum assembly a little better on the 800. But overall, terrific bike! Such a smooth ride and very nice handling! And you can't be the classic look. 😎👌

@@SteelCowGirl4Ever I only had clutch boil three times in the time I owed the bike. While at Rolling Thunder, a rally in the Black Hills and Daytona. Not your normal situation for sure. I bought a new Suzuki front wheel that with new wheel spacers fit perfectly and was drilled and taped for dual disc brake rotors. Got the other items at a salvage yard for motorcycles. I am sure it will cost more now but in 1999 I only spent about 400 bucks. I only needed one finger on the brake lever to stop and two fingers would slide the front tire. Very close good friend has the bike now. Engine assembly has never been touched except oil and spark plug changes, paint still very good. She has made 103,751 miles with only two owners. Metzler 888 tires are really nice on this Bike and will last 18 to 20 thousand miles.

@@SteelCowGirl4Ever I saw your other post and my guess is you lost the hose or the seal in the cylinder. The clutch uses brake fluid in the release system. The bit about a wet clutch you read means the clutch itself runs inside the engine cases bathed in engine oil.

@@1BuckeyeRob I agree! I know most people seem to like Harley-Davidsons.
