@Michael-dx7fe Good luck getting the old saw running again, this particular model does have a unique carburetor.

I sure love mine. It`s a really nice one that runs perfectly. A friend of mine used to have a 175 Kaw dirt bike with a carburetor like this.

I have a Mall 12A, What fuel/oil ratio are you using? Thanks for posting, I'm inspired now.
@kellyharness858710 ай бұрын
What was recommended back in 1951 when the 12A was first introduced was 3/4 pint of 30 SAE motor oil to one gallon of regular gasoline, this equates to a 12:1 ratio which seems very rich by today's standard. Because the oil's we have today are greatly improved from the 1950's this is what l run in all my saws of that vintage, I run 30 SAE non detergent motor oil at a16:1 ratio. l use a "ratio rite" cup for accurate measurements .
@donkuwik33909 ай бұрын
First I would say thank you for your reply. I finally got my Mall 12A to run albeit with carburetor problems. My saw is the later version with auto oiling and has a Tillotson ME3B carb. The file size for sharpening the chain is 9/32 inch which I have not been able to find. What do you use? Thanks again for taking the time to help me out, seeing and hearing your saw in action was what it took to keep me trying.
@kellyharness85879 ай бұрын
It's good to hear you got the old Mall back up and running, that's awsome. I'd go out and check the chain size on my Mall but l have it and five other saws on loan at a tree trimming school for display. A 9/32" file seems a bit large, if l had to guess I'd think 3/16" again I'm just guessing. l picked up an electric chain grinder a few years back and pretty much use that exclusively now, if you can't source a file you might try your local saw shop and have them sharpen it on their grinder, goodluck.

Runs Nice! What bar did you put on saw?
@kellyharness858711 ай бұрын
It's the 30" bar that was on it when l picked the saw up at an estate sale about six years ago, l was told by a saw collector that it could be an experimental bar that Mall had but not really sure.

Very useful Tool, ment to cut to cut w/lower 1/2 of bar tip. There is a 4" stub bolted to underside of bar near nose of bar. The stub bolted to underside of bar keeps bar from kicking up & back which it would do if not for the stub. Christmas Tree growers have used these a lot cutting X-Mas trees down , with saw you can reach under limbs & cut tree down w/nose of bar. Used these bars on saws on Grandfathers Christmas tree Farm in 60's & 70's. As with a lot of tools general public is quite often an accident waiting to happen, people were hurt in accidents & sued , as a result you dont see them as much now. I use mine firewooding, great for limbing & bucking up too 10" wood. Very good tool if used with caution. Wish video poster gave his take on the stub&Bow bar as a whole. Going to give Kelly a Good Watch. Brings back old times cutting X-Mas trees for the Holidays.

Hey Dan, thanks for the comment, always enjoy hearing from people who actually used these old saws back in the day. l was excited to throw this one on the bench and get it running again after acquiring it, out of all the close to a hundred saws in my collection this was my first bow bar saw, so the video is literally showing the first time I'd cut with a bow bar and l was having a blast doing it. Glad you enjoyed it.

That's a wild bar, are they meant to cut out on the nose like that? Is there a specific purpose for it?
@kellyharness8587 Жыл бұрын
I believe they were designed for, "plunge style cutting", diameters of about 12 inches or less as shown in the video, I've heard that Christmas tree farmers used them to cut their trees down with.

Wow, and I thought the old Homelite Zip saw I had was big, loud, and heavy. Wonder why they made them so long back then, bigger logs? Or was just the way they designed them? Very cool saw and video.
@kellyharness85872 жыл бұрын
I took this saw to work one time to put it on their scale and it weighed out at 120 lbs. As for the size, l think you're right, they were cutting larger diameter trees back then. It will also cut sideways, just have to swivel the bar.

The older saws like this one from the early 50's do run at a lower rpm and some like this one have a gear reduction drive but all were 2 strokes.
