Dang, nice boxes. Is the internal packing stuff in there too?

Cannot tell you the surge of feelings I had when I saw the table full of these boxes... Instructions for both, original foam-glued-to-cardboard shaped buffers and an advert booklet too for the 2-port. I couldn't pick one to leave behind.

Okay... the 4port with the special box. What you are supposed to do, is plug the 5200 cable into the box, attach the box to the coax input on your TV, Plug the power into the RF switchbox and then here is the important part... then you plug the power supply cable into the power outlet last. Having said that, the arcing you saw is normal because there isa bout 15v at nearly 2A of current traveling through that and when you plug it all in with the power supply already plugged into AC power, then it will spark initially. But not really anything to worry about. - So first make sure the consoles power one. Remember you have to have a game cartridge inserted to see anything since they don't have boot up screens or anything like that. - Plug the controllers in before powering up the console. Those ports are at risk from static discharge damage. - If the systems come up and show a game title screen, then you test the controllers to see what is or isn't working. But the only way to really test all four ports on the 4port unit is using a test cartridge as I think only the game Tennis released with 4 player support officially. - The controllers can be rebuilt, but it might also require that the consoles need their pokey trimmers adjusted for the controllers to be properly calibrated and work with all games. - The trackball can't be tested without using a game that supports it. Missile Command on the 5200 with a trak-ball was as arcade perfect as we could get back then. - Enjoy the system and have fun playing the games!

Holy homework; You get a gold star for info! Glad to know arc'ing it didn't likely destroy that power/RF box. Also, had no idea about plugging the controllers in first - Never had a problem back in the day, but then once they were in, they never moved so, phew! Both consoles power. Haven't gotten a screen, but was having fights with my TVs. The CRT's remote is temporarily MIA and doesn't allow input switching w/o it. The antenna-enabled flat TV wants to scan relentlessly, and without knowing there's a signal going, I can't tell if it missing the channel is lack of signal or dumbass TV. The struggle continues; some unfortunate unavoidables delay the games...
@IvoryTowerCollections8 күн бұрын
@@IgnoreMe-KillerRoo If the TV scanning isn't seeing a valid signal from the console with it powered on and a game running, then it is likely your TV doesn't have an analog tuner in it. On my TV when I do a channel scan. I have to pick Ant/Cable and from there it will first check analog signals and shows that is what it is looking for. Then it switches over to digital. If you don't see it specifically looking for analog during the scan, then it might not support those older signals anymore. I still have an old school CRT on hand in a spare part of the house that is ONLY used for rare cases like this in my service work, or for color calibration on older game consoles.

I would start by doing like you said and plugging the consoles in with one test cartridge to see what works and what doesn't. Most likely the controllers will have issues so you will either want to get some rebuild kits or look into a modern replacement solution. There are rumors that the RF switcher box is unsafe but I think that's exaggerated a bit. Also, don't use anything abrasive on the cases. Seems self explanatory but some people have tried magic erasers and stuff and end up discoloring and scratching the case. As far as the internals go... Well I won't be much help unfortunately. But I'll see about getting some more people to give you some advice...

I’m less concerned about the condition of the controllers; as you say they are likely to need rebuilt entirely. It’s that RF box, and figuring out how to get the 2-port connected up. I have a couple ideas with stuff I have available. But I kinda want to do it with someone more experienced ready to jump in and stop me from being an idiot. The two-port still has the protective sticker over the silver!! 🫨

@@IgnoreMe-KillerRoo Man... I really wish I knew anything about this in order to help... Luckily, any old hardware I have works just fine, but, now that I think about it, could probably do with a good internal cleaning. I am not horribly familiar with the 5200 hardware; does the 2 port just take a standard RF switch box, unlike the proprietary 4 port monster? That is my understanding, but I could be wrong. I really wish I could be more help here; that pile of Atari goodness looks really cool. One day, I will be cool enough to own a 5200.
@KrooTon13 күн бұрын
@@AggieThunderpaw well if I can get both of these working there will be another one available! I’m not trying to hoard these things. Do you know any Atari hardware gurus? I think you’re correct; the issue is that the analogue out is on an RCA Male port. Can I just use a coupler to the Genesis RF switcher? OH! Wait, WAY back I got an RCA-to-RF cap… I wonder if I still have it… and if that would work for this? Was supposed to allow you to connect the Genesis w/o the switcher… but I upgraded to the composite line. 🤔 Will have to hunt.
@IvoryTowerCollections13 күн бұрын
@@KrooTon You cannot use a Genesis or NES RF switch box on older Atari consoles. Those switch boxes were auto switching and they aren't 100% with the signals the Atari consoles put out. So it might work, but would look very snowy. The F-Coax adapter is what I think you are thinking of and that will allow you to plug the RF cable from the 5200 directly to the Coax ANT input on older TVs and modern ones that still support analog tuning on their Coax ANT input. But it will likely require that you plug the 5200 up with a game, turn it on, and then on modern TVs, you have to run a scan for channel signals. The TV will 'see' the 5200 as a valid channel signal (likely channel 3), and should then display if the system is working.
