Testing candidates to name 500 streets in a city is a good way to get lots of autistic firefighters. Not sure that sort of memorization is the most important thing a recruit should be focused on IMO.

I know this video was made a while ago, but it is really helpful. I'm not yet old enough to be a firefighter , but I'm working on the physical aspects of the job. I have wanted to be a firefighter ever since I was little, but I was told that only men can be firefighters, I now know that that is not true, but I also know that I will have to work really hard. I want to be better than five year old me though I could ever be. It will take alot of work, but I will push myself to be the best I can possibly be. If you have any advice for teenage girls that want to be firefighters, it would be greatly appreciated.

When you are 16, sign up for a fire explorer program near you. They will teach you about the fire service and it's a great way to get started. Also, keep you background clean and do not get into any trouble with the law, drugs, traffic tickets or anything that could cause you to fail the background. Learn to make good decisions using good judgement and you will do well. Thank you, Dean

I'm 18, thinking about my options for my future. On one hand, I want to go to art school for animation, on the other, firefighting is always something I've admired and I'd like to be able to help people. In the past few years I've been doing a bunch of research on it. Problem is, I haven't ever been in any emergency situations to know how my body will respond to the stress and trauma, so I'm not sure if I'm cut out for it. It's a lot of hard work physically and mentally, and you mentioned memorizing street names, which would probably be really hard for me since bad memory runs in my family genetically. I'm kind of at a loss-should I wait a few more years until I feel more mature? Or perhaps go after a different career and revisit firefighting when I feel ready?

EMS, Firefighters and law enforcement are the forefront of people who need access to Medical Marijuana. The medications given in place of it cause liver disease, heart conditions and countless other long term negative effects on these proud men and women. It is widely known that the medical community is plagued with substance abuse which usually falls under Opioids and Alcohol. I feel myself that it should be illegal for any of these safety sensitive jobs to allow alcohol consumption. I want a Drug Free Workplace as much as the top brass but the reasoning of marijuana “being in your system” days after is ridiculous. Meth gets out of your urine 3 days after usage, thats why it’s so highly used in safety sensitive jobs. This logic masquerades as workplace drug usage prevention but is actually a discrimination against MM and those who have been helped by its incredible properties.

Tattoos on your face, I understand if that is not acceptable. However, once the public observers those freedom's being enjoyed responsibly. This will eventually lead to those firefighters that are enjoying their freedoms responsibly changing the Public's perspective on marijuana instead of the marijuana changing the Public's perspective of the firefighters. Step outside the box! PS alcohol is more toxic and destructive to the body and mind than marijuana. P.s.s.- firemen know education prevents fire. So educate the public and put out the fire so y'all can enjoy the smoke.

I live in San Diego and our dept has a zero tolerance for thc. They say well its out of our hands bc its a sch 1 drug. Meanwhile the city is sucking up massive tax revenue from the sale of the sch 1 drug. Its a complete joke ...you can come in..hungover which means your maybe not under influence but your gonna be underperforming ..you'll get a laugh. No big deal. But my god ..use pot on your day off, in a legal state and your a criminal and might lose your job. San Diego sucks....and they wonder why people leave.. Many agencies in Ca DO NOT have randoms..they trust their crews..and lookout for each other. If a crew member is acting unusual they step up and intervene. I don't have problems with drug test for illegal drugs. I have problems with the drug test they use for legal cannibus. The solution is a mouth swab with a thc window of 6-8 hours...

Hi Aaron, I'm not going to debate the policies of fire departments here. With that said, even if a guy comes in hungover he should be sent home. You're right, if you're in a condition where you cannot perform at your best, you shouldn't be at work and that starts at the company officer level. What’s your thoughts about when it’s federally legal to smoke ? Will firefighters be able to smoke on their time ?
@Tomorrowsfirefighter4 жыл бұрын
I don't think firefighters will ever be allowed to smoke pot on their free time. At least not for the foreseeable future. Most fire departments have a drug policy and have you sign an agreement that you won't smoke anything, cigars, cigarettes, pot, etc. If you're serious about becoming a firefighter, you won't even think about doing any type of drug because you'll also be asked about the amount of alcohol you drink. Just because it's legal doesn't mean fire departments have to hire you. I hope this helps. Dean

Pot and tattoos have less of a stigma now than it had in 2017 and it wasnt even that bad back then. It's sad that people are so mad and frustrated that people are able to Express theirselves so honestly while working hard that they have to ruin their career for these people. Why would you throw a stick in someones spokes when they're riding that bike to save lives from fires to help the world, why would someone want to tarnish that beautiful act and desire to be a strong fireman and save lives and capture the American dream by being that hero and not having to hide yourself from who you are.
