There are interviews on KZbin of Natalie (as an adult) talking about making this movie. She considers it a good experience. Her parents did make them cut some objectionable scenes from the script.

Her father is some kind of low-level crook, who regularly abuses her. Her step-mother is some kind of sex worker. She's not wanted at home.
