What a voice, what a performance . Brings me to tears. I was probably 12 yrs old when my best friend's dad got us first row orchestra tickets for Funny Girl. I was already a fan becausr People was a hit on the radio. (You remember the radio, right?) What an incredible performance! I love the rawness of young Barbra's voice and am ever grateful that that I got to see her on Broadway and again in concert years later! Enjoying her autobiography and still listen to her records! (You remember records, right?😉)

My father drove me to see Funny Girl in the theater 1969 because I made good grades. I am not exaggerating when I say that when I left the theater I had changed: I paid less attention to my homework 😱.

An observation...Barbra had just finished a full performance--after a full run of the production. The strength and control she has over her voice under these circumstances is quite remarkable--and remember--she is not miked.

She very well could’ve been mic’d as they were being used more and more in theater throughout the 60s and 70s.
@cameronmekhi6 ай бұрын
she actually did have a microphone during funny girl! she mentions it in her book and theatre history tells they were just starting to be implemented (body mics as shotguns or ones at the apron of the stage had already been being used). but that of course doesn't take away from the natural power of her wonderful voice ❤
@chocolatesouljah4 ай бұрын
Yes! It’s one of the reasons it was recorded. The microphones fed into recording devices. It’s from the soundboard. I read somewhere, but wouldn’t be able to verify from which source that she often listen to the soundboard recordings in order to critique her herself. Which in my opinion sounds very strand, like to want to know how she sounded in order to change and improve.

I am currently reading Barbra's new book, which Santa thoughtfully brought me this year ;) There's quite a backstory to Sydney Chaplin's leaving the original Broadway cast, parts of which affected Barbra for many years to come. (But I'll let you read it for yourself.)😊

I’ve been a fan since her first tv special (yeah, I’m that old). Our family had gotten a reel to reel tape recorder, which was a very big deal back then, and my sister borrowed her friends’ albums to record. I didn’t pay much attention to…….until a heard the most unique voice and phrasing I’d ever heard before or since. I did finally get to see her live in concert many years later. My wife asked, “how does she still sing those long phrases and high notes?” I said, “that’s why she’s Barbra Streisand and we’re not!”

One of my fondest Memories was gifting her a YSL silk scarf in Central Park while filming ON A CLEAR DAY. With the scarf was a small wrapped package of some primo grass. I gave it to her and after the lunch break she called me over and asked," So, is there great stuff in there", with that Brooklyn accent.

By the time of this encore of "My Man" Barbra already had five albums under her belt. One was the "People" album for which she won the Best Vocal Performance, Female Grammy award. Grammys were also won for Best Accompaniment and Arrangement (Peter Matz); and Best Album Cover (Robert Cato and Don Bronstein).
