Rev Davis is the most gangster person to ever touch a guitar. If you listen he’s playing with 3 hands.

I'm doing a research about Patton's life and I think I've found out the reason why he had to move from Dockery Farm July, 1928 Clarion-Ledger Archieve "Dockery predicts that with the early coming of improved machinery and more scientific methods of cultivation, that plantations now using fifty tenant families will soon reduce this number to ten. Mr. Dockery was presented to the club by H. A. Carpenter, the efficient farm demonstration agent of Sunflower county, and at the close of his speech extended to every Rotarian a cordial invitation to visit his plantation at Dockery, Mississippi."

Armstrong respects the melody which is so crucial to the song's appeal...it's wny I love the Glenn Miller Band's instrumental version...

The best version, to me, actually " appears" on an album called VSOP, which i can no longer find: similar to this one, but more dreamy , poignant, amazing presence( sp) and smoother riffs?? if that were possible and....hmmm....i would be very suprised to find this one was actually the one i heard so long ago!!!

Sorry, I like Armstrong, but this was a stylized version, slurred, mumbled the beautiful lyrics. The best version is by Willie Nelson on the Tonight Show. It was magic, performed by the greatest musicians, simple and sincere. See it, its here on YT.

busessuck1 - def the best Stardust. Louis schooled, well, the whole species. I have listened to my favorite players/singer's versions and I was shocked, shocked I say! to discover that many of them (Django, Nat King Cole...) did not put their heart and soul into it as they had done for many many of their song choices. How could they not? Anyway Satchmo made it his own and I am glad.

Thank you. I hadn't heard these versions of the song before. I had only heard the later Son House versions, which were a lot slower. These versions are much closer to the Robert Johnson respray.

Every time someone covers one of his songs or breaks it down on youtube they get close to the heart of what he was doing, but no one is ever able to capture his rhythm and phrasing properly. Even the guitar and vocal arrangements are always simplified, always at best reaching at what he was able to achieve in the interplay and independence of his guitar and vocals. This isn't really a knock on anyone and is probably as it should be though, because I really believe Blind Willie was so good that he is essentially inimitable. It's more to aspire to sound and achieve something so distinct. Anyway just my two cents, as his recordings always blow me away.

Re Christian Corrao, I think you said it exactly right. Nobody ever sang or played like Louis Armstrong until he came along. Almost every singer of renown at least tried to upon hearing him, whatever kind of music they sang. He set the style for American singing. He knows absolutely what the melody is and exactly where the best is, and he’s completely free of them both, they inform him without limiting him in the slightest way. This song especially shows his true genius.

This really is the best version, Louis always sort of reminded me of my grandfather. He has a very deep and raspy voice, I love you Papa.
