This looks like a high spec machine for a thin client. The PCIe might be better put to use with either additional 1GB NIC slots x4 and make an opensense/pf sense box, or an m.2 board for additional storage and use it as a host for proxmox/virtualisation or a nas. May be even 2.5Gb or 10 gb NICs

@@alanstedman6716 Yeah I think you are right, cards for proxmox or a raid card for a high end NAS might be a better use of that slot! I appreciate the comment! ✌️

Man, great review on a mostly low spec product that costs about U$850 new. This is more a "lean" than a "thin" client. You'll be better buying a new tiny Lenovo for the same price and if you're tight on your budget you can't miss a U$100 Intel 8th gen M720Q with a U$20 riser card with tons of expandability. For a little more, you can find a M920Q with also double NVME M.2 slots. Keep the good work!

Over 155 comments at this point, so I won't scan to see if my notes are already posted. As you said, there are a myriad of options for old PCs. Others I can share are a hardware firewall for your home network. Linux based systems such as PFSense and several others are perfect for this, as you can use as little as 512MB's of RAM to run them efficiently. PFSense will hide your entire network from hackers. If they hit your system, they will only find your firewall PC. Better still, the OS configures and burns to a CD with YOUR SELECTED parameters. Hackers CANNOT rewrite to a CD. Another use for old PCs is a Smart Mirror. This first requires building a large wooden frame, detaching a monitor screen to use behind the mirror, then using the PC guts to run it. There are several vids on KZbin with DIY instructions for the adventurous. Once you install your Linux OS of choice, download and run "Smart Mirror", and you're ready to go. Smart Mirror is useful for posting daily info: i.e., news, weather, etc., is voice command ready, and can also retrieve and play audio from your media files. Or use the mirror to comb your hair. You can also load an old PC with thousands or millions of pictures, GIFs, or videos to build a wall mounted slideshow. Just add a monitor where you want it, then connect the PC. That's all I got here. I've seen several other videos on old PCs, so do a search. You'll be amazed at all the options available.

I'm using a 2011 Dell Optiplex 790 Ultra Small Form Factor as my media/download/network hub, a 2011 HP Probook 4430s as my test subject for hardware/software experiments, and a 2017 Lenovo Thinkstation p320 as my media server. I've been tempted to pick up some other older model SFF desktop units, but presently have no use for them, though I have considered doing something similar to the "smart home" concept, but with a car. I used XBMC and KODI for years, but the TVDB killed it for me; One day, the first entry in my list of movies and TV was "All the crap you should not add to the TVDB". On investigation, it turned out that the guys running the TV database were a couple of childish, argumentative, ban-happy edgelords. These days I use a VivoMini witn Windows as an HTPC/downloader box and remote into it using tight VNC, or control it with an airmoouse when watching stuff. You can't beat just using windows file manager to launch stuff, with VLC set to automatically resume and go full screen. I've put together several Batocera PCs for friends and family, superb piece of software. I love mini PCs, if I had the money i would start a collection. As well as the VivoMini, I have an ASrock A300 as my daily driver/couch PC and Lenovo M53 for mucking about.

The top two suggestions provided by articles and videos about reusing old computers are media server and retro gaming. Call me old and boring or just too busy, but I have no need for either. The HomeAssistant suggestion sounds intriguing. I've started doing a little bit of home automation, and I quickly ran into the problem where a "smart" item you're interested in isn't available for your ecosystem of choice, and HomeAssistant looks a lot like the One Ring to Rule Them All (I'll take the fall for the pun, even though I don't own any Ring products). I do have some old computers lying around, although none are SFF; one's a minitower, a couple are late '90s full towers and there's one custom build in a bulky, heavy rack enclosure that aspires to being pressed back into service in a rack someday, most likely with new innards. The minitower, which used to be my primary desktop, occasionally gets hooked back up, booted from a utility flash drive and used to secure-wipe hard disks that are then retained for use as data recovery recipients. That's not something that most people would need, though. If I didn't find it so handy for that, I'd probably gut it and build a new PC in the case, because its case is serviceable, non-proprietary and has enough ventilation for a modern build, although not a very high end one.

The used market is so huge that you can literally pay whatever you want to pay. 2) Easier to upgrade than newer stuff. I love my old Thinkpads! 3) So gratifying because of the huge performance differences from stock to modified. 4) Huge value proposition.
