That's a Mark II GT40. IN 65 they did run Mark Is. They're still racing GT40s in England

I remember seeing both of these cars in the basement at Indianapolis, during the exclusive 'Basement Tour'. First car appearing when you got off the elevator was a 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR which had raced at Leman with this 1965 Ferrari in the film sitting adjacent. Of coarse being a Ford man the GT40 sitting in the next aisle (also in this video) is what had me spell bound. This very Ford GT40 was borrowed by Ford when the 2005/06 Ford GT was being designed. They had it at in design studio for Camilo Pardo and design team, and then factory drivers drove it at Dearborn Proving Grounds alongside engineers to share feedback and design the 2nd generation GT to have some elements of the early race cars. Wish I could bring this one home, to go with my 05 and 2019. The perfect Trifecta!

Two of the most menacingly beautiful sports cars ever created, with the other equally beautiful and iconic, yet less menacing, Jaguar E-Type coupe being right up there with them. The P 51 is obviously in the same category as one of the most sublime mechanical marvels ever created by human beings. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."

Truly amazing, however 90% of people seeing this on the road would think it's just another fibreglass replica with a ford power unit

Now imagine the Uhlenhaut Coupe that sold for 135 million EUR. The only car worth more is probably to original Bugatti Type 57SC La Voiture Noire of Jean Bugatti that went lost during WWII.

Anyone else think it is rather poor form for the IMS Museum to sell these cars off when they were gifted to it? If they don't want them, they should offer to give them back to the original donors. As a donor I would be pretty cheesed off if someone took my gift and then sold it on.

Incredible to see and hear these cars run. My wife and I took the IMS Museum Basement tour in August 2023 and the Ferrari was the first car we saw when the elevator doors opened. I knew it was a 25 which was impressive enough, but when our guide said it was the Le Mans winner in 1965, I was flabbergasted! Same goes for the GT 40. Feel so privileged to have seen them up close.

Not really much of a “modest GT racer” … especially given that the FIA refused to homologate the 250 LM as a GT. That doesn’t, however, take away at all from its significance or beauty.
