The best thing that I got out of the conversation between Eartha and Lyndon B. Johnson, was that Eartha outlived at least most of the people in that very room 😂

i always felt sofia was fine for the role & the real issue is simply that during her death scene she is badly underacting and then immediately al pacino is overacting just as badly, and the stark contrast just destroys the audience suspension of disbelief. for most of the movie i actually think she conveys well the passiveness & uncertainty of a young woman who is unsure about her place in life, love, family, and catholicism.

I think Blonde is a masterpiece. Sensitive and beautiful like Marilyn Monroe. I suggest she would have approved. The outrage surrounding the film is unsurprising considering Americans, in particular, have always been notoriously squeamish regarding nudity. I feel the film is sympathetic not exploitative. I suppose it is shocking to many shallow filmgoers to be presented with the nuts and bolts of life lived in an attractive female body.

Not that my opinion matters but, as a life-long fan of MM, I read Joyce Carol Oats's BLONDE when it was published and absolutely loved it -- understanding fully that Oat's novel was totally fiction. And with regards to this movie? I thought it was absolutely outstanding, and was totally emotionally involved and riveted from open to close, even though knowing the end, I was devastated nonetheless. I may be in the minority but I loved this film.

Bought the original double-LP on eBay as a college graduation gift for myself... Best live concert I've ever listened to. Garland was one of my first crushes, and I still have a soft spot for her.

I can't compliment enough how well researched this documentary is! and can I just say, the women of the silent era were one of a kind stars. I've watched colleen moore and have been captivated by her since, probably because all the resources they had back then was themselves, so every silent film is a spectacle not enough people dive into. I think I'm gonna go on a clara bow film binge right now 😅

Eartha Kitt did what any citizen of a "democracy", who, taking that "democracy" at its word, and exercising the presumed "right" to freedom of expression, should do. she did *not* exercise that right to an extreme. she *spoke* her mind. and payed for it. putting the lie to that putative "right".

nice summary of TWO FACED WOMAN - it was an odd film - awkward plot and lacking in wit - but it stands out in Garbo's canon for throwing a wet blanket over persona - "they made a deity seem human" pretty much says it all it's america-centric for the NYT to only count her hollywood years when they noted her career had lasted 15 years - the real start of her career began in Stockholm in 1920 - which means her career lasted 21 years

I was very happy for Cher - I really was amd still am - but this was basically an apology Oscar® for completely and utterly snubbing her for _Mask,_ a performance that absolutely should have been nominated. As for Glenn Close, I think she would have had it in the bag if only Adrian Lyne (the director of _Fatal Attraction)_ had had more faith in his creation and stuck with the original dramatic ending instead of replacing it with this redonkulous Rambo-style action thriller ending. Not that excuses the Academy® for not awarding her again and again afterwards, though. 😒

Mock her efforts if you want, but I sure appreciate Mrs. Johnson's beautification projects. It may seem lightweight and out of touch, sure, but First Lady's projects are meant to avoid controversy. That said, when the President entered the room, controversy should be expected to follow. I'm not against what Ms. Kitt did or said, I agree and empathise with her position, and I applaud how she reasonably and rightly spoke up. It's awful how she was smeared in the news. I just don't think it's an either/or, but a both/and situation. Both approaches help.

I think it is interesting that no one here has discussed how her voice is different here from her days at MGM and the mid 50s. While it did become deeper and stronger by "A Star Is Born" it still was not quite a refined instrument yet. In 1960, 1961 Judy's voice has blossomed into a devastating instrument. It's not really clear why her voice deepened at such a young age. She was only in her 30s. The alcohol, drugs, smoking and life style she maintained could all probably be mitigating factors. I think her daughter had the same thing happen to her voice for the same reasons, except that Liza had a career with no vocal training. Constant belting without proper technique doesn't work for everyone. At Carnegie Hall, Judy's vibrato is more controlled and she has mastered subtlety and acquired a power in her voice. I've read about "the flutter of fags in the tight pants" at her concerts at the Palace during the 60s written by some ignoramus. Her gay audience has always been there for her and are still the back bone of the Garland fan base.

I was 18 1/2 years old when I saw this Oscar® telecast, and I couldn't fucking believe it when _The Color Purple_ didn't convert on even ONE of its nominations. I mean, you'd think it'd at least get Best Sound and/or Editing and/or Sound Effects Editing and/or Cinematography. Acknowledge the film's greatness in SOME way!! I understand why Geraldine Page won that night (and I hadn't realized that she had gotten nominated so many times before), but don't completely shut-out _The Color Purple_ just because you, as the WHITE Academy®, would rather honor a film about White people in Africa than African people in America!! 👎🏻🤦🏻‍♂️🙄

I wish more celebrities nowadays had the courage of Kitt. It's crazy how much influence celebrities continue to have, they benefit with riches bc of our support and when we ask for support back they act like they can't hear us. It's also crazy that so many fans live in delusion that celebrities shouldn't have to or shouldn't *want* to speak up. For basic human rights. So people can live at least bit more happily while they live without a single real world trouble.

It’s a subjective award so that means it’s not fair to begin with and how do you really validate one is better than the other. At the time, the voting members preferred another over The Color Purple. Why does everything have to be about race? If any, I think Margaret Avery should have won supporting actress and the musical score of the movie was great. In the end, it’s the film that matters, not whether it got an award. Today, it’s all about affirmative action and it’s sickening.

What an amazing video about an incident I cannot remember hearing before (but I'm middle aged, so who knows if I've forgotten it). I have to contrast Kitt's actions with the famous Katie Couric interview with Bush I, which began as a "let's see the White House Holiday Decorations" with a genial unplanned visit by POTUS. Couric proceeded to grill him on the various scandals of his and his predecessor's administrations, and she was criticized for "hijacking" the opportunity, but the show didn't cut from the interview for a moment, and it made Couric's career (need I note that she's white?). I also find the parallels with the just released tape of Samuel Alito, his wife and CJ John Roberts at a Supreme Court event, in which people are criticizing journalist Lauren Windsor for nor respecting tradition in getting the tapes.

Good video presentation. I could add that Germany sent out peace feelers in 1916, believing the conflict was going nowhere. British officials were interested and wanted to talk. Somewhere along the line the process failed unfortunately.

So bizarre to hear this as super retro music of the time. This was in 1961 which was only 22 years after The Wizard of Oz. That's like waxing nostalgic now on the music of that ancient time of 2002 and the good old days of Pink's "Get the Party Started".
