Here we have the modern day terror bird, now let’s hope it doesn’t get any bigger.

i'm designing a character with bird feet, and this is immensely helpful. The bird that is inspiring the design is not gonna necessarily be an ostrich but this does help inform what adaptations i can make for such a character to support their weight with part bird anatomy, no matter what the bird in question is so thanks a lot you saved me so much headache with such concise and practical info. You might be showing bird anatomy but you're the goat o7

This was great to learn about and see, as an artist is always exiting to find anatomical information on how creatures work. The muscle configuration was especially fantastic to see. Thank you!

I recently got both femurs and both ulnas and radius bones along with all four feet off a 12’10” gator that was obtained from gator hunting permits. And I wanted to display them and have been doing research on open air decomp in a cage and the degreasing process etc. I was curious to know if I need to some how drill out the bone marrow if there is a lot since the bones are big or if it dries out through the rest of the process. I don’t want it to smell if I get to the displaying part.

Cool project! Yes, good ol' natural decomposition can be very effective. For mammals and some larger birds, it can be useful to drill the ends of long bones, blow out fat and marrow with compressed air, and then degrease. The kicker for crocs is that they have a very narrow marrow cavity, so it can be hard to reach. I tend to degrease in acetone under a chemical fume hood. Other organic solvents are better but more toxic to humans. As a last resort, you can also slowly cook-but best not to boil-the larger long bones and vertebrate; I avoid heat but it can be helpful if you're careful. Hope that helps!

@@witmerlab thank you so much!! I was planning on slowly cooking off the rest of the meat and tissue and hope it helps cook out some of the marrow and then continue the degreasing process with maybe dawn or tide detergent in water unless it’s okay to try to degrease with acetone outside in a acetone safe container. The taxidermist I gave the gator to for processing gave me a bottle or 40 clear developer to whiten the scoot bones once those are cleaned and degreased as well

Now I REALLY wonder what caused the 'gator's death. I know crockin could consume almost everything, so I don't think this shoe was its last (and deadly) supper. 🐊 👞 Grace was super cute, though! 😊 I hope you would like to make more videos with her!

How weird... If you accidentally touch the skull with that scrapel (?) here and there, it sounds like it's completely hollow. Bird bones might be really as thin as a sheet of paper!
@witmerlab4 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Many bird bones are actually thinner than a sheet of paper, but typically are sufficiently reinforced with bony struts to not collapse.

Very interesting and educative... It raises me so many questions (but I should reach more about this): Is it possible that the air sacs filled another purpose than thermoregulation? If not, maybe that the animals which have a smaller antorbital cavity thermoregulate themselves in other ways...
@witmerlab4 ай бұрын
Yes, indeed, all these animals have multiple means of thermoregulating. And one of the hypotheses I offered in my dissertation (and published in my 1997 SVP Memoir) is "the epithelial hypothesis" which is that air sacs expand opportunistically within the mechanical constraints of the system. So, playing a role in heat exchange may be a secondary role that natural selection hones into an efficient physiological device in some clades...but it masy vary from clade to clade.
