She was the best, though the opening for this show plays like an ad for perfume. And that haircut was not flattering.

NBC, dude, not ABC. The WSYR mentioned in this promo is different from the current ABC affiliate in Syracuse after 2005.

This show is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, and it played a direct role in creating modern television as we know it. Its creators went on to make shows like Taxi, Cheers, and The Simpsons. The vast radiation of talent from this show's production team (James L. Brooks, James Burrows, Ed. Weinberger, etc.) would go on to create or inspire most of the comedies on American television from the 1980's to the current day. First degree of separation creators like Greg Daniels (King of the Hill, The Office, and Parks and Recreation) continue to inspire and create new shows. As a bonus, MTM (the studio) also more or less created modern TV workplace drama with shows like St. Elsewhere and Hill Street Blues, which themselves went on to inspire everything from L.A. Law and E.R. to all of the Dick Wolf procedurals.

That was the original scene between Lou Grant and Mary. The one that aired in the pilot was slightly rewritten to make Lou a little less grumpy. They only changed it about 15%, but if you watch the two takes back-to-back you see the adjustment.

“It’s about what it’s all about” terrible tagline. Looks like a good show though. This must be where B.J. became a doctor and met his wife before he went back in time to be on M.A.S.H

If you notice, in the opening credits, Mary always either catches the bus in front of the house, or parks on the street in front of the house. That is because the house was built in 1892 and had no driveway.

I like watching it as a single woman living in a flat, and working in a city. It was me when I was younger, and it is so nice to relive other decades. I liked Rhoda, too for the same thing: living and working in a city, but she got married and tied up with Joe. Nice to go back to those times, even if not great comedy.

Her personal life was so tragic. Alcoholism, being the adult child of one, but she was a survivor. The biggest mistake Mary Richards made is that she didn't know or think it was okay to have a life that didn't involve her co workers. I saw the pilot episode and thought she lived in the whole house. I didn't know at the time that a House can be converted into an apt.

The problem was the neighbours. All those women just walked in and sat down, and didn't even knock half the time. Her flat was like a railway station waiting room.

@RedheadLondonHa! Ha! They never see women living like that in The UK. They call them Flats. Also on many UK TV Shows, many women do shows where they are cops then do a soap opera or even dr. who which has the same cult following that star trek has.
