Phil, Thanks for putting the time and effort into this answer. I went back and I looked at my fingering again and you are correct that 1-3-4 would be awkward in a triad. I should have said that I use 1-2-4 for the basic inversions and then I can easily add the octave note with the 5.

Phil, I haven't taken piano lessons, but I've been playing for 5 years. I looked for this because when I stopped to see what fingers I'm using on the different inversions I'm not consistent. Sometimes I might do one set of fingers and then in another passage or song I switch the middle finger. I want to try being consistent. But, I'm not sold on using 1-3-5 on these chords for 2 reasons. First, my 4 finger is stronger than my 5 finger. But more importantly a lot of songs will use an octave inversion that adds one more note, the octave at the top of the inversion. It's not always the root. Sometimes it's the 3rd or 5th that is the octave. But the important point is if I use 1-3-5 on a triad, I have to use different fingers for those three notes when the octave is added. I favor using 1-2-4 and 1-3-4 on the triads because then I can simply add the 5 if the octave note is there. Can you tell me why you think that's a bad idea? Maybe it's some reason that universities or professional teachers would say.
