Wow! Just Wow! How I love this gentleman Christopher, he even ruffles the black priest that much to the effect of him not even understanding Christopher's intelligent facts because he himself doesn't know hardly a bean of information about all the abuse the church has done and is still doing to this day in 2024!! He's completely ignorant and so are the black priest's in the audience, with head bowed down and trying not to look at him in full flow of the truth! Love the way Stephen Fry looks at him in awe as he discharges his venom on the church.

Hitchens was a drunk and a very damaged man. Some of his early work was excellent (The Trial of Henry Kissinger is an example), but his support for the illegal invasion of Iraq completely undermined the rest of his life's work and his atheism rises to the sophistication of an angry sixth-former (much like Richard Dawkins). His work has to be treated carefully, and certainly doesn't deserve the ecstatic praise it often receives.

What a pompous statement. As if you had the insight to call him “damaged.” He was a brilliant thinker, one that clearly threatened your fragile beliefs.

@@CattleDog2856 And here we go. Thank you for providing an example of precisely the kind of hagiography to which I was referring. You don't become a chain-smoking alcoholic like Hitchens for no reason. If you knew anything about his life, or about addiction, you might begin to understand the damage that caused him to go that way. (Go on, do a quick Google...) As to his thinking,, exactly WHAT was so "brilliant" about it? His understanding of religion was superficial and stupid, and he ended up reversing a lifetime of political principles to support the illegal invasion of Iraq. His thinking was glib and sensational. Compare his work with that of someone who really can think and who actually does have some integrity like Noam Chomsky and you might start to understand. As to my "fragile beliefs" you have no idea what they are or how fragile they may be. Just because you don't have any "insight" into people doesn't mean that others don't.

I don't think that fact that misbehavior happens among the clergy is the thing that makes it appropriate to condemn the entire institution. What brings that condemnation on, in my eyes, is the practically inevitable attempts to cover up the acts and protect those that perpetrated them. It's exactly the same as police brutality - I do not blame law enforcement in general for these incidents. But I do blame them when they circle the wagons and try to insulate the perpetrators from rightful justice. In all of these cases the institution needs to wholeheartedly throw their bad actors to the wolves. Only when I see them doing that without exception will I stand back and withdraw blame from the institution. A corollary to this is that most of the time it should be the institution itself that exposes these incidents and brings the perpetrators forward to suffer secular civil justice. Every large institution is going to have bad players - it's unavoidable. You can try in your selection processes to shift your bell curve to the right, but you can never get it wholly perfect. So every large institution needs an internal investigatory branch, and that agency should uncover most of these situation. Then these matters should not be handled internally. The bad actors should be brought forth to our government authorities to face standard justice. These are the things I call for. I call for them from the Church, from law enforcement, and from every single large and powerful institution on the planet.

I'd simply say that when it comes to the crimes of the Church throughout history, a fairly glaring difference between theirs, those of the Police, Corporate greed, etc is that in the Church's case, it's always in the name of "god".

Pretty sure I commented on this years ago, but it still hits the same way. Greed and Religion are almost solely responsible for mans worst atrocities against his fellow man. Greed may be impossible to kill, as it's a natural tendency, but religion? That can be deleted from any enlightened civilization and the sooner it is, the better. Just look at Israel today, greed for land and hatred of the competing religion. Both are disgusting.
