Was MOST fortunate to have attended Madison College (today JMU) where Happy formed. I saw them many, many times and walked away amazed by their artistry. Every piece on this program was performed live by HTM in venues on or off campus. To say Happy was a good band is an insult. They could stand along side with the very best of the time. These guys took a back seat to no one!
@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusic21 күн бұрын
@jamescpotter Agreed! 💯 Only saw when they reunited. Great meeting Stan again backstage. I actually got to play the double-neck he used on all their albums. Monster band. Amazing and intricate compositions with highly technical and precise musicianship.

Bill has the feel and is so much better than Al. He's up there with McLaughlin. And I'm not sure about Stanley' s bass but I think he played a Gibson EB 0 in the Hymn - album but used the Alembic live in 1974 and on his solo album with Connors.

Don’t down play the greatness of Al Di Meola His body of work is huge much more than Bills
@JazzRockFusionSynthesizerMusic26 күн бұрын
@@thinman4430 If you read most of the comments here, you’ll realize Al D’s “greatness” is not being discussed really, nor is Connors’ greatness. It all comes down to a matter of individual preference. Connors has a very unique and unpredictable style while Al D has a well-worn and predictable “sameness”. His compositions and execution of all guitar parts over his “body of work” show technical prowess, yes, but after Land of the Midnight Sun, he is on autopilot with his riffs. Steve Morse, another technical monster suffers a very similar “sameness” across his many albums. This simply cannot be said about Connors. He seems to reinvent himself from song to song. His 80s body of work where he went very Holdsworthian legato, was nothing like his work with RTF. I have probably everything ever recorded with Connors during his stint with RTF, even many bootlegs and he NEVER sounds the same. His style is immediately recognizable to me but his runs and phrasing are always different. Al D and Steve Morse were never this flexible. But though I have been a professional music reviewer since the 90s and a guitarist since ‘67 - I have never heard a guitarist so unpredictable as Connors was. This fact, is what I feel has captured the ears of his devoted fan base.
