I loved the performances and the direction that Todd Phillips and Joaquin Pheonix decided to go with the character of Arthur with having him face the consequences of his actions and battle with his identity through them. The challenges placed on Arthur both felt subversive and yet cohesive with where we last saw him in 2019’s Joker. However, the lame musical sequences, thin story, and off-putting ending bog this movie down tremendously! Still, I have not stopped thinking about since I left the theatre, and that is worth something in my opinion. Great review!

I like Iman Vellani got to do some more in the MCU at one point I thought they'd just leave her appearances to just the Ms Marvel show, also I think the movie did good to show Carol can mess up and needing to fix the problems that develop. The first movie was more a rush around and bash enemies, this had more character development. Not my favorite movie, but I usually like to know what is going on with the people and places of the MCU - I love the cosmic stuff and especially the scenes at the very end that I won't spoil. And yeah I also want another thing with Ms Marvel, Iman Vellani is a massive superhero fan irl and she cares for marvel superhero stuff - even getting frustrated they called the MCU the 616 universe when that is supposed to be the main comic universe. Also, I like her character and Ms Marvel should get more a chance to grow with the MCU.

I agree the criticism was over the top. The movie has its charm, kind of in the way the original Star Trek series does, in that you get to enjoy the relationships between the characters and a clear story unfolding. There were some fun action scenes and the overall humor works well for me. the villain was okay, nothing to write home about. I did however enjoy this movie and wouldn't mind rewatching.

*TL;DR: I rant about the double standards of people unfairly hating on superhero films and defending The Marvels and Shazam 2* I 100% believe it’s overhated. It and Shazam 2 are some of the most overhated movies in recent memory. Everyone and their grandma acted like the movie shot the president when in actuality the movie was just meant to be fun and entertaining. Same for Shazam 2. Shazam has always been in his own corner of the DCEU, and with it being one of the final films in that universe after the abrupt end of the DCEU, I have no idea why everyone went into that film with such high expectations for universe shattering stuff that brings Shazam to the DCU when the first film wasn’t that at all. And for that reason I can fully understand why Zachery Levi did that Tik Tok live to tell people to see and support the movie, yet everyone thought he was having a breakdown or was throwing a tantrum. Everyone would be pissed off if something they put effort into gets shat on for no reason, so the amount of personal attacks against his character, jokes made at him, and online bullying he receives is a 100% uncalled for since he seems like a nice and chill guy from what I’ve heard. Is Shazam 2 a masterpiece? No. But is it fun and charming? In my opinion yes. And this is why I just sort of form my own opinion on superhero stuff instead of listening to the majority or loud minorities. Most of the criticisms boil down to - It’s not like Endgame - It doesn’t connect to the rest of the saga - It’s pointless - The CGI is bad (don’t get me started on that, everyone acting like every form of CGI like Quantumania is bad. Bitch have you seen The Flash, THEIR CGI is terrible 😀) - It’s woke - If you dislike it then you’re racist/sexist/ableist etc Yes the projects could 100% connect a bit more like The Infinity Saga. Yes there’s rough CGI in one or two scenes. But regardless on what your thoughts are on those criticisms, I don’t go into movies or shows with those mindsets. I just want to be entertained for a bit and have fun. And that’s just a few I can point out. People are so picky or only just certain scenes to back their points - CGI argument, they only use one or two scenes from certain movies and recycle those bits of evidence where the effects look off to back up their overall point, and every single one of them do this (Doctor Strange in the train in NWH, Yelena making the helicopter explode, M.O.D.O.K, etc) they always use the same scenes over and over to prove that the CGI is awful in every Marvel movie. Motherfucker, if the CGI is truly dog shit then you’ll show more examples. Theres gonna be slightly off CGI in almost every movie that has it, superhero or not. Let me show some examples of brilliant CGI (The Celestials in Eternals, the Deviants, NWH’s final swing, triple swing and cracks in the sky, Shang Chi and Mandarin fighting with the Ten Rings, the dragon in Shang Chi, Sam Wilson as Cap flying and fighting Flagsmashers, Wanda becoming the Scarlet Witch, the hex itself in Wandavision, Loki’s costume transformation in Season 2, the Void and that cloud monster, the end of time where He Who Remains is, the sacred timeline, the avalanche in Black Widow, literally whenever Moon Knight was on screen, Ms Marvel’s light up fists and her pose, Multiverse of Madness and the universe travelling sequence, the fight where Doctor Strange and his variant use musical notes to fight, Gorr the Godbutcher and his monsters, the Olympian Gods, Shuri suiting up, Namor in his kingdom, Man Thing, Kang’s suit and time chair, the Quantum Realm and the abstracted looking characters, The Guardian’s new ship, Adam Warlock’s powers and flying, Star Lord nearly dying in space, The Marvel’s switching places when they use their powers, the SABER outpost, Deadpool and Wolverine stabbing into each other, the trippy effects in Agatha All Along and the Witches Road itself) so many great examples of CGI in my opinion!!! I probably just did more effort finding proof of CGI in most Multiverse Saga projects, than those people who use the same shots to prove their point over and over again lol - And people pointing out small lines that don’t make sense and using clips from Deadpool 2 where he says “That’s just lazy writing” Sure, some of these points from a critical standpoint may stand, but what gets on my nerves is that a lot of these criticisms or points didn’t seem to exist during the Infinity Saga. I don’t recall people spending their time going through every movie in that Saga to find lines that don’t work and make videos of Deadpool saying it’s lazy writing, but I see a lot for the multiverse saga So it’s all kinda just making me go “What the hell change? What’s wrong with everyone? Have I gone insane or some shit?” Like to me the entertainment I got from the Infinity Saga is present in most of the post-Endgame content aside from She Hulk It’s like after Endgame, everyone smashed their rose tinted glasses, yet they act like the Infinity Saga was perfect when it most certainly wasn’t. Does that make it bad? Obviously not. It just makes it flawed, but can still be easily enjoyed. And seeing the critisms for The Marvels and Shazam 2 really made me realise this, as I just can’t find any of what they’re talking about in these movies, or at least let those flaws taint my enjoyment of those films. Hell is rewatched The Marvels yesterday and there’s plenty to enjoy about that film. Kamala’s humour, the dynamic between the trio, the costumes look cool, Nick Fury is pretty cool in this film, Goose is hilarious, the action with the position swapping was awesome to see, I even liked the [CAMEO] post credit scene.
@odysseyfour19978 күн бұрын
Thank you for your passionate and detailed comment! You're absolutely right! I certainly have issues with the Multiverse Saga but as you said, the Infinity Saga wasn't perfect either albeit a lot better than the Multiverse Saga. 90% of the CGI in these movies is incredible and seamless and the only reason that there are a few sketchy scenes here and there is due to Disney overworking their animators and setting deadlines that they cannot logically meet. I do have a lot of issues with Disney, their quality control has been questionable of late but they have certainly handled Marvel much better than Star Wars - which has had its good moments in the modern era to be fair. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness received so much hate and for what reasons? I legitimately think that people got overhyped about what cameos they were going to see that they ended up disappointed when Tom Cruise didn't show up as Iron Man or whatever. MOM is one of my favourite films in the entire MCU, Sam Raimi brought a unique vision to that film unlike any other in the series, many of which are very bland stylistically. There are definitely modern movies that are woke. However The Marvels characters are well rounded and they earn their strengths. There also isn't any man hating or agenda pushing. It isn't woke just because they're women. The most blatant woke moment is actually in Endgame (most people's favourite MCU film) where all the girls band together was clear virtue signalling but it is such a small moment that the most you can do is roll your eyes and move on, it doesn't hurt the film. I can't think of anything nearly as bad as that in The Marvels.

While I agree with the hate on some levels, it is overblown. There have been some hits like No Way Home and Multiverse Of Madness, some middle of the road ones like Eternals and Deadpool & Wolverine and some misses like Love & Thunder and Quantumania. A mixed bag overall. The rushing of projects has lead to a lack of a cohesive purpose for the multiverse saga as the infinity saga felt meticulously thought out which is why it paid off so beautifully. It hasn't been all bad since Endgame but there were very few true misses in the infinity saga so I think people just hold the MCU to a higher standard which I think is fair but we should recognise when it is good, even if that's all it is, just good.

Your review was really good! I have some questions for you if you'd like to answer them! Do you believe that this movie was on purpose sabotaged by its own director? Do you believe that Arthur truly became The Joker in the end of the first movie? If not, then do you believe that it was justified what they did to his character in the ending of the second movie? Some people that liked the movie believe that this is a somewhat of a "full circle" moment, that Arthur never truly became the Joker and wouldn't become the Joker anyway, that "he got what he deserved" (the famous punchline from the first movie, this whole movie is a recycling bin of the first one, really!) for believing that he was "better" than anybody else. That this is his downfall for hurting people like Mr Puddles. I personally believe that Philips did all this on purpose. And that he clearly wanted to show Arthur and us, the audience, that when you dare to defy, authority figures for example, you will pay the consequences for your defiance. It's so sad and horrifying how his story ended. And the way the camera focuses on his face, we see his eyes as they slowly lose their light and life, all alone, with no one by his side, is truly a horrible way to close off a character, even as crazy and messed up as Arthurs was. For me, this movie truly was one of the most horrific and disrespectful movies of the year. Thanks for and if you read my comment, even if you won't answer my questions! Happy holidays and a happy new year to you!
@odysseyfour199717 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I believe that Todd Philips intended to make a good film however in my opinion it is clear that he also used it as a statement. He wanted to subvert the audience and give the studio the middle finger. I understand the point they are making about Arthur being a pathetic character that was aware of the things he was doing wrong and that the Joker is a symbol that can be inhabited by anyone but I don't think it makes for an interesting film. I hated the ending because it felt like the movie was a waste of time and a means to make a few thin points that are easy to understand. It is probably a realistic version of the events that would follow the first but it didn't feel like a story that needed to be told. I agree with you on all fronts here. I don't think it was the right point to say that Arthur deserved that ending. A more nuanced examination of consequences would have been better. Regardless of all of this, the film just isn't assembled very well in the edit. The pacing drags and the screenplay is so surface level that the courtroom scenes lack tension. I appreciate the comment and I too wish you a happy new year!
