The game has a selection of a few pre-set AI behavior possibilities which it rotates through. All you have to do is close and restart the game to force the AI to switch between these behaviors. This means you can deliberately get them to play with Toninho if you want. All you have to do when you see that they're not playing with him is close and reopen the game (might need to repeat this 2 or 3 times) and it's a guarantee that this AI behavior will reoccur at some point.
