can you tell me why you chose that specific underlayment? Wer are in the process of building our home, currently framing up the roof. We're doing unvented attic, with non foam insualtion. will need vapor diffusion port but stuck on underayment . thanks
@DesignBuildDoug18 күн бұрын
We opted for a fire resistant peel & stick underpayment because of the added durability against both fire & water intrusion along with the air sealing capability. You could definitely skip the fire resistant component if your home is low risk. The air sealing portion is important but could be achieved by presealing all of your roof decking seams and using an inexpensive synthetic underlayment instead assuming your roof had good pitch & the risk of water intrusion under the metal is low.

I love your videos, Doug! More, please! On another note, how in the world do you sell a house with a one-car garage? :-) I see these in CA from time to time on new builds, but I would never buy a house without a two-car garage. I know we all are under budget pressures, but I'm curious to know how buyers respond to a one-car garage.

Good question & thank you! In this particular neighborhood many houses have no garage at all so a one car is par for the course.

The main difference with mine was that the "risers", I made them from HDPE or ABS, I don't remember which because I did it almost 14 years ago...time flies. It's still going 👍

For the walkable roof deck, any options for a truly flat roof without resorting to pedestal systems? Could you keep the crickets and scuppers but level the surface with a permeable ballast/fill material under a flat finished material (pavers, artificial turf)?

It is netting, not a moisture or air barrier. As long as the holes 🕳️ are smaller than the insulation chunks, ie 1 inch, it is fine. After the netting is up they will blow insulation into the cavity they just created.

I need to know approximatel number of sausage or cartidge required to cover 140 sheets of sheathing. The problem is that this is not very common in our area, the supplier will not take that back if I order the extra quantities. And they don't stock it so If I run out Framer has to wait until I get the tubes.

About 5 sausage tubes per 6 sheets of Zip. You can do the oz. math to transition to cartridges, which I do typically prefer over the sausages but both work fine.

Hi, Thanks for the video. What about the glass type? FXC says Polycarbonate, but Velux has Tempered glass over laminated glass for the same cost. Is there a down side to polycarbonate?
@DesignBuildDougАй бұрын
Here’s a comparison to address the question: 1. Polycarbonate: • Pros: It’s highly impact-resistant, lightweight, and more flexible than glass, making it less likely to shatter. It’s often used in areas where impact resistance is crucial, like skylights in high-risk locations. • Cons: Polycarbonate is more prone to scratching than glass and can discolor or become cloudy over time, especially with UV exposure, unless it has a protective coating. 2. Tempered Glass: • Pros: Tempered glass is stronger than standard glass and resists breakage. It’s also scratch-resistant and maintains clarity over time, even in outdoor conditions. • Cons: While it’s impact-resistant, it’s still more fragile than polycarbonate. When broken, it shatters into small, less dangerous pieces, but it’s heavier than polycarbonate. Overall: Polycarbonate may be better if impact resistance and weight are priorities, while tempered glass is a good choice for clarity, scratch resistance, and long-term durability.

You only need to space/measure the ends for a good lay out. the field can vary by an inch without affecting the strength. A piece of plywood with a hand hold cut into it would make a good gauge to help with spacing. Use a tape measure every 10 feet or so to check for tolerance build up.
