In Yoruba culture, if you're a wife of the family, everbody in your Yoruba husband's side of the family is older than you, even the one day old baby is your elder...and you must respect them. 😂

For The Yoruba, name and naming is a deep cultural thing. Names are just not a way to identify Names to the Yorubas are representation of the family history, antecedents, achievement, and what is expected of you in terms of behavour and actions. Names are seen as a way to call out your inner self. Naming a child therefore is done by the experienced member of the family which can be the parent or grandparents. Who knows the traditional and historical fact of the family. Also name giving by parents is seen as a honor to the parents. Fact remains that you do not necessarily have to call them daily by that name giving by the parents ir grandparents. The actual father is allow to give their baby any name they wish and then reserve the name given by the grandparent for special occasions as an endearment or as a warning. Remember this proverb of the Yorubas" ile laa wo ki a to so omo lo ruko" Another proverb that buttress this is " Oruko ti a ma so omo eni , inu eni ni ohungbe"

The bedrock of the culture is respect (omoluabi), if you're not respected, you're certainly not loved. That's why yorubas find it hard to understand other cultures who seem to not care for respect and yet claimed to be loved. Slavery, religion, colonialism, over westernization, and feminism not withstanding our culture have endured for centuries.
