There are many of great volunteer fire departments and I was a deputy sheriff for many years. They attend the same police training. In WV the only difference between police and sheriffs departments are their jurisdiction. Those areas still have Fairmont addresses.

@@raypeters4525 Yes, other areas of WV are beautiful! I have lived in the Wheeling area and Sissonville, WV. A short drive from Cheat Lake can give you the same experiences. There are many houses in Cheat Lake that are not 400,000. That is the median cost. Preston County and areas of Monongalia County can provided the same experience.

My 5th g-grandad, Frederick Ice, ferried George Washington across the Cheat River (thus, Ice's Ferry). Looks like a nice place--from the bridge--but I certainly couldn't afford to live there.

So I did some research to see why it was called Cheat Lake: While it’s easy to find the source for the name “Lake Lynn” (a nearby community built by the power company), the origin for “Cheat River” is lost in history. In it’s entry for Cheat Lake, “The West Virginia Encyclopedia” reads: “Roots of laurel and hardwood leaves tint the water, hiding sharp rocks and treacherous currents. This lead to drownings which some say caused settlers who began to live along its banks before the American Revolution to say the river ‘cheated’ people of their lives.” “Others think it was named for the cheat grass that sprang up in newly cleared lands, or for an early French settler, or from a word of Indian origins.”

Great! There are many people that retire in the area. The weather is great here. Winters are not to bad and summers are not terribly hot. There are many options for inside and outside recreation. There are two hospitals, so medical is never an issue.

I am really sorry you feel that way and had such a bad experience. There are many areas in Morgantown and outside of Morgantown that are great with low crime rates. I was a police officer for 13 years in Morgantown, Wheeling, and Charleston areas. There are good and bad areas like any city or town.

TX native here. I have spent around 3 years time in Morgantown since 1980. It's amazing. It's so much better than TX. Unfortunately it's also poor compared to here. I wish I could afford to stay there all year.

It definitely depends on what you are looking for and what part of Cheat Lake you are looking at. There are areas away from the lake that have affordable housing. Today, the lowest priced property in Cheat Lake is $255,000.

If you are not accustom to the roads, it is definitely a new experience. I can say... most of those drives have beautiful views.

In Morgantown you have Doctors everywhere.

We have WVU hospital and Mon General hospital. The crime rate is definitely lower than most cities in the United States. I have lived and visited several cities and Morgantown is a relaxing, slow paced city. 😊
