You could always run ollama inside your workspace, especially if you use GPU workspaces. But we haven't tested how cost efficient is that compared to alternatives.

After signing up and creating a new workspace, Daytona gets stuck at the "Warming up" phase - no matter how long I leave it running. I've tried multiple time over the past 24 hours.

So: - the con is you can't chat and edit in the same window (I think it's negligible since you just need to change browser tab, don't need to copy paste anything, which is great) - the pro is it's REALLY a free alternative to Cursor (not like Claude Dev - now Cline - which is great but you have to pay those small amounts since it will only work well with sonnet) Am I missing something about the functionality and UX of this product? Am I missing stuff in saying this is the ONLY really free alternative to Cursor/Claude Dev? (Nice work!) Edit: One thing i like is you can use the real VSCode, not some forks :)

How is daytona different from VS Code devcontainers extension other than the fact that it's not available to individual developers who code as a hobby, and not free?

Excellent question. We aimed to highlight the advantages of standardizing your environments using development containers. To illustrate this, Chad presented a demonstration within the local VS Code environment, ensuring it's accessible for all to replicate. However, if you require a self-hosted, controlled solution due to specific needs such as security, locality, or scalability, and you need one that adheres to the development container specification, then currently, Daytona is the only sensible option.
