As Allen Thompson mentioned below, the airplane was sold to Don Wall of Omaha. Toyoshi Kimura ended up making an off-airport landing in 1996 or so, causing substantial but not beyond the point of repair. Don Wall purchased the airplane and then spent the next seven years repairing and updating it, and it made its first flight after the rebuild in 2004. In 2021, Don donated the airplane to us at the Bede Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization established to support youth in aviation. After a full inspection and completion of the FAA-approved BD-5J training program, I flew the airplane in July of this year and in October I received my BD-5J Experimental Aircraft Authorization (type rating). Since then, the airplane has made flight demonstrations at the Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport (KLBX) in Angleton, TX and the Treasure Coast International Airport (KFPR) in Ft. Pierce, FL, as well as flying to the Stuart Airshow (KSUA). Watch the normal websites for upcoming appearances. Here is a quick flyby from the Angleton flight demonstration. I was a friend of John Duncan and was around him in South Florida. he loves flying a little BD5J. Think it was one of the highlights of his career to be able to fly out for the first time. He owned one for a while and used it on the airshow circuit. When Tamiami airport was new, she used to put on a little bit of an airshow for the tower operators in the evening. Normally he was the only one flying around. Not sure where JOHN is today. Lost contact with him.

Very cool. But apart from the deplorable music, I don't care much for the modified, pointy airplane nose. It departs from the very recognizable BD-5 profile. The White BD-5 shown later in the video has the original shape. Much nicer IMO.

Just found this video...A lot of great memories from back then. I was lucky to fly hundeds of airshows in 2 different BD5-Jets. First met Al when I was flying the Oshkosh Airshow and he came up to talk to me about his Jet he built. At first I thought it was probably just a story but Jim Bede told me "This Kid built one hell of a Jet, check it out." John Duncan went there first and flew it and raved about it. Next Ron and I went up to check it out and had a ball flying formation aerobatics. Ron and I flew F4's in the same Squadron in Southeast Asia early 70's, which was the last time we flew formation Aerobatics in Jets. We did it a lot in Pitts specials. Al Thompson was one of the best craftsman I ever met. I actually had him finish my 2nd Jet in his hanger, where we got it certified by the FAA, test flown, and in Airshows one week later. I can sure remember the Great Parties we had in his hanger also.."EPIC."

Hi Ed. Do you know Charlie Johnson? F-105 pilot. He’s a friend that I do car work for. He had told me that he has found two kits. If you know him can you contact him and talk to him about the plane. We’ve been taking for years about finding one. I think they are the piston versions but he will want a jet built. We’re going to need help. Ron the mechanic.

@garyroy3503
@garyroy3503 4 жыл бұрын
I had one of the kits and what you didn’t hear is a complete plane cost a hell of a lot more than $2000 to buy from Bede. That price was just the basic sheet metal fuselage, there were a dozen other kits, you needed to complete the plane (Wheel assemblies, wings, empennage, canopy, controls, engine, drive transmission, instruments, hardware and more. The biggest problem, none of the rivet holes were pre drilled. You had to hand jig and cleco one piece at a time, it was all guess work and the average labor hours averaged 1500 or more. All in all, you can easily tie up $25,000 very easily and that is doing the assembly work yourself.

James Holt... Sorry to burst your dream. That is why I had to get rid of mine, the cost to own a small plane just became ridiculous. Insurance, fuel, maintenance and money set aside for an engine were some of the major costs that went up. Another big ticket was annual inspections, every year you have to take the plane apart and have it fully inspected. In the old days we used to do it ourselves but nowadays you have to pay a licensed mechanic and it can run a couple thousand dollars. The only way for an average Joe to fly today is rent by the hour our find a group of guys to buy in on a shared ownership. The latter can work but you really have to know your partners, before signing the papers and buying a plane. Flying is the greatest thrill you will ever experience but it is difficult now days. Good luck James, try to make it happen if you can.

My Cessna was based at Opa Locka Airport (Sun Flying) in the 1980's but I must have left just before Kimura bought the BD from you Allen, around 1988. I actually owned one of the BD-5's but it was not a jet, just the original gas engine. I kick myself every time I think about selling it for about $3000, during the depression of the early 1990's. I am sure they are not that cheap now, it was an incredible plane and must have been beyond belief with the jet conversion. It is a shame that Toyoshi and 9 passengers died in a plane crash only 5 years after he purchased the jet. He was flying family and friends South in a Beech B90 that had a mechanical emergency and eventually hit the ground before reaching an emergency airport near Lake Okeechobee. This guy must have been an amazing pilot, FAA records showed he had over 20,000 hours and was ATP and Helicopter Rated.

James Holt... for the same reason my 1979 Cessna is now in the $75,000 dollar range and I sold it for $20,000 in 1988. It comes down to what is called supply and demand, new price goes up or less become available. My Cessna cost $35,000 new but they are now $250,000, just for one of the base models. There are very few Bede’s still around so they draw a big buck, if you can find one in decent shape. Less than 1000 kits were ever made and I doubt if 100 of them are still flying. If you happen to find a kit and all the pieces, you could easily get into the $30,000 range just to put it in the air.
