It appears to be the ground control station for trans-Pacific aircraft. They appear to be passing contact frequencies for onward travel over land. I only know about trans-Atlantic from my side but the aircraft usually pass their track, ie. Position at each hour in degrees North & West. The ground station will tell them their allocated sel-call (the der-dar), which is used to alert the aircraft when ground is trying to contact them. They normally go silent until they reach the end of their track where the ground station will call the aircraft and pass them frequencies (usually VHF) to contact as they start to pass over land. It can get quite busy at times. Have you listened for VOLMET, it is a voice transmission (on USB) in the HF air bands that go through the weather conditions at major airports around the world. Off hand I don't know the frequencies for your area Jeff.

I agree with your findings although it is pretty close. I did notice on CRI that when switching to the GA-800 and Radio Shack antennas, there was a hum on the audio which I didn't hear on the MLA. Although the hum was present on NZI with all 3, it was much less noticable on the MLA. What are the cost differences between the MLA and GA-800? I am assuming the GA-800 costs much more!
