When Elon Musk announced he was moving twitter “X” from San Francisco to Texas, I immediately thought of you because it was through one of your videos years ago that you walked around and you showed us where that building was and I thank you for all your educational videos that you’ve ever put out!!!!

I would describe Bowling Green as related to Drakkar Noir (albeit with a lighter and less dense character) as well as Gillette Cool Wave aftershave and the green La Toja aftershave splash. It is more sophisticated than any of those, but somewhat comparable.

How absolutely fascinating, tank you . Cheers!

Hi Lanier, Seth here from Olympia. (I changed my KZbin name a little while ago.) Some fragrances that I think are consistent with this theme are Guerlain Vetiver, Dana (nowadays) Monsieur Musk, and Proraso Red (sandalwood) aftershave.

What a lovely coincidence! When I decided to buy my first designers fragrance with my first salary back in 1993, I went to Chanel’s counter and asked for Egoiste. The sales lady told me that I should buy something more trendy and youthful like Cool Water but I said I didn’t want to smell like the rest. Then I went for something more appropriate for daytime and she offered me Eternity. I chose Chanel pour Monsieur instead and I was delighted with my choice. One day, many years afterwards,I learned from someone who deserves all my respect the following thing: Wear what you love and not what they tell you!❤
@sweetvictory5643Ай бұрын
Your story is unbelievable. When I went to Chanel's counter, ladies there never offered me something not from Chanel. In fact, never ever any lady in the fragrance department offered me not what I was interested in. I wear only what I love because I buy fragrances for myself. However, there are people who need an advice on fragrances because they want to impress others.

I wore it a lot back in the day. Initially, it was a gift from my maternal auntie Ena because she fell in love with the scent while shopping on base (McChord Air Force Base) back in the day. I had been wearing Grey Flannel for years, but this scent was lovely for spring and summer. I loved it and was saddened that it was discontinued. And bring back Kenzo Tokyo too!

Wonderful to hear your take on these classic gems from Ralph Lauren. I loved Safari for Men when it was first released, and it became a daily driver for me at the time. I think it's worth noting that the 1985 film, "Out of Africa" (with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford) based on the novel by Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen - surely must have had stylistic and romantic influences on RL's Safari campaign.
@TheSwanwoodАй бұрын
I stand corrected - RL's Safari campaign launched in spring of 1984, and pre-dated Sydney Pollack's "Out of Africa" by a year. However, in a 1986 NY Times piece on Milena Canonero, costume designer for the 1985 film, Ralph Lauren is cited as being influenced by "her work".

Another fun reference to Shalimar in a movie is from See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) starring Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. The fabulous villainess is portrayed by Joan Severance (80s supermodel-turned-actress), and Richard Pryor's character, who is blind, identifies her by the Shalimar she wears. I adore Joan, so I blind bought a bottle of Shalimar so I could smell like her. And now every time my film group watches a Joan Severance film, I spritz a little Shalimar for the occasion.

In the genre of fragrances that you seem to prefer, I would check out Paul Sebastian Fine Cologne from 1979. A super cheapie with a lovely spicy old school scent . Very good longevity and sillage for such an inexpensive fragrance.

Top 10 for life is very difficult, and it would change week to week. Too many would be left out that shouldn't be. But for now: I'd have to start with my 3 all time favorites before going to occassion-appropriate categories, so: 1. Ralph Lauren Polo Green 2. Dior Sauvage EDT 3. Creed Bois du Portugal Then I'd go to categories: 4. Most formal, elegant "scent for a King's coronation: Creed Royal Oud. 5. "Everyday scent": Creed Viking. 6. "Office scent": Creed Original Vetiver. 7. Freshie/Oceanic/Marine/Aquatic: Creed EROLFA. And since I'm a big fougere fan: 8. Guerlain Heritage. 9. YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme. 10. Tom Ford Beau de Jour. What can I say, Im a Creed lover. Too many left out though. Invasion Barbare. Terre d'Hermes. Guerlain Vetiver. Etc etc. But that's fir tiday.

Your valuation of these each fragrances wich we all are so familiar with is just what we all need now, nothing else than impressions of the moment! My all time favorite of these is absolutely the ADP's Colonia, became my signature of all these among and over so many other brands not listed here! Viva Italy, viva Lanier!😊

Lanier, may I ask you please have you ever heard of a body spray and perfume called Limara? When I was 16 in 1985, I started to use these, as there was nothing really for young men. There was one called American Dream, and another called Yellow Moon, they don’t exist anymore, they were marketed at females but I always use female scents as I prefer them. You mentioned you worked at Macy’s that’s so cool. I Love the USA
@laniersmith17983 ай бұрын
No I never heard of them. When I was at Macy's I actually worked in the credit department so it wasn't very glamorous, until the day Elizabeth Taylor came to the store!

I adore chypres but I need cold weather to fully enjoy them. Traditional chypres have felt out of favor because, at least in my opinion, because they need certain level of elegance and currently most people go so…poorly dressed that it doesn’t match with such masterpieces. I could never wear Paloma Picasso or Cabochard with sneakers and jogging pants for instance. It’s like the opposite, wearing a suit to a soccer match. Well, it’s summertime here in Costa Rica, and I will have to wait some months before I can enjoy the elegant embrace of my chypres.
