There were less than two companies of Turkish troops stretched out along the bluffs, the biggest problem for the Australians was the confusion of landing in the wrong place[which likely worked out for the best], that the battalion and brigade commanders had no idea what was going on, the incredibly broken ground made any advance confusing and piecemeal. All of the battalions were mixed up, with officers rounding up whoever was there and clawing their way to the top. Back on the beach, Brigade commanders, unsure of what was happening, kept later waves of troops on the beach, which allowed the Turks to decimate the scattered groups that did get up to the top. A small group of Australians did get to the summit of Baby 700, but were either killed or forced to retreat. It was the only time Allied troops ever got to that location during the campaign.

Inside the museum, 3rd floor?, there's a war crime section. I don't recall any mention of the Hue Massacre

We lost eighteen precious Aussies, and two dozen of our blokes had awful wounds. I regret we ever interfered in their revolution. I also regret the fiendish firepower our forces aimed at those young locals attacking the foreign invaders. The Aussies counted 245 Vietnamese dead, and three enemy captured. But we're reliably informed that they had hundreds - maybe 350 - wounded in addition. Has anybody apart from Gough Whitlam ever said "Xin loi" to the Vietnamese mothers?

Vivian Bullwinkle holds a special place in my heart. I was one of the Vietnamese war orphans brought to Australia on the 2nd Australian Operation Babylift flight, 17'/4'/75 to Melbourne. Vivian was the Matron of Fairfeld Infectious Diseases Hospital at the time, She played an important role in bringing us to the safety of Australia, and to Fairfield Hospital. I wish I had had the privilege of meeting this remarkable Australian woman. I would love to havae met her and thanked her for her sevice. I was at Fairfield Hospital for about 4 weeks, before I was ready to join my adoptive family in Adelaide. My dear adoptive mum passed away in 2023 at Hollywod Private Hospital in Perth. My mum had also been a registered nurse. There is a Vivian Bullwinkle wing at this hospital that my mum passed away at, this was quite special to me. Next year, 2025, is the 50th anniversary of Operation Babylift, I thank Vivian, RAAF, Qantas, all stafff and volunteers, and the Australian government for bringing me and my VN war orphan peers to the safety of Australa and my loving adoptive family;. RIP Vivan, thank you for your service.

I don't think he was insane but I do think that he was brainwashed to a certain extent from the German army and from the horrors of WW1.

A Vietnam vet in his 80s suggested I watch this. This team's tenacity and commitment are top-shelf. It is very humbling listening to their story. Thank you for speaking up and defending freedom, which always involves sacrifice and 'eternal vigilance.'

In consequence of his valiant and courageous acts, he suffered PTSD. I'm surprised he could even look at a firearm again let alone touch one.

In 1992 I had the pleasure of meeting Vivian Bullwinkle at the 50th anniversary of the fall of Singapore held at Kranji War Cemetery. I was an Australian Army Medic covering the service. One of the veterans had a medical incident. It was Vivian who came to assist me treat him. Her humanity and caring nature was heart warming. An incredible Australian.

The 2 films come from different times,in 1980 America and the world were very different, much more mild.Downfall is very good, however most people don't speak German, it's more authentic also.Most people in the past absolutely didn't like the things that occurred in Nazi Germany and I think preferred a more sanitized version of it in a movie.

The ViXi was chased & running like rats. I was not born yet but my Mom told me what was happening during the Tet Offensive. BTW, the people of Hue never forget the atrocity committed by the filthy commies against the civilians when they fled back to the jungle.

The fact that Pop saw 5 monarchs, 5 wars (Boer, WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam) umpteen Prime Ministers and a continent of colonies become a first world country (including all the progressive changes in our everyday lives) is what astounds me. I wonder what his opinions were of Australia at that time. RIP cobber 🇳🇿🤝🇦🇺

Audie Murphy is a remarkable human being. A real genuine individual, a war hero and a fine actor. I work in the film industry, and believe me, Hollywood could take a lesson.

If you want to know more read his biography not the book to hell and back (he left out a ton of stuff) his commanders actually forbid him to go into combat after he won the moh and actually posted guards on him, but he found ways to ho out to fight. One of his specialties was hunting enemy snipers.
@petersearls44433 ай бұрын
That story really doesn’t hold up, because he was awarded the MOH almost two months after the war ended.

In what other army (or even country) would soldiers other than Australians share their smokes with their Prime Minister and Commander? The Australians were freaks from the future who broke the Germans to bring on the armistice; the only complete democracy to fight in WWI.

You know, everyone talks about how Jack Nicholson's character is right, but you're forgetting the context: if Colonel Jessup really believed what he said, then when Santiago died, he would have taken full responsibility, taken the fall for ordering the Code Red, and retired or quit. He talks about "honor, code, and loyalty," but he was completely willing to send two good Marines up the river on his behalf for following his orders. And in order to protect his own ass, he got up onto the stand and lied under oath in front of the Marine Corps courts-martial. The man was a coward, a liar, and a bully, and he uses the Marine Corps code of honor as a shield. Good riddance.
