Hi bill I’ve mentioned before that The Manchester evening news newspaper’s headline story is about 1 of my school friends who was hit by a train I think it was in 1978 .. I only noticed it about 20 years ago. It was so shocking at the time they just announced it in assembly. No counciling or anything like that! I guess it was the 70s… .. not sure the manic street preachers will like being compared to green day …. Cheers bill 👍

Hey Bill! The Stones are always a good buy. Cloud 9 is a brilliant album too, but I’ve only got it on CD. Not heard that Al Green, but love his voice, it’s so smooth. Loads of great buys. I keep hearing people talking about the English Teacher album… going to have a listen on Spotify tomorrow. Great that you found something in Sound & Vision, I never do and generally find it really overpriced. I’m just by the sea in Lossie. I’m going to the record fair tomorrow in Elgin so hoping I might see something there. Cheers, Jack

Hi Jack - thanks for watching. Yes I was very happy to pick up the Stones CD. Lossiemouth is a lovely place. I had a cousin who lived there years ago. I hope that you had a great time crate digging in Elgin earlier. I meant to do a video on your Weekender party contest, but with Scotland’s early exit from the Euros it was a case of “No Scotland, No Party”. I was struggling to think of real party records apart from Saturday Night Fever. Cheers Bill

Congratulations Bill on reaching 100 videos - may there be another 100 upcoming. There's no such thing as too small a collection or too big a collection - all that matters is if you are happy. If you feel you need to reduce your collection that's fine if it's for space, but never do it out of guilt. As for what to collect - it should always be about the music you like and should never be about what others, be they be the VC or music critics, deem to be what should be in your collection.
@billvinyl-lists45726 ай бұрын
Hi Pete - apologies about the lateness of my reply! Some great words of wisdom in your comment. I think perhaps there is an element of guilt within my original video. I think that in the last 5 years or so the collection has grown quite a bit, however I am not listening to the acquisitions as frequently as I did as a poor student. Am I constantly chasing the next record that I should have bought in the 70s and 80s (but didn’t have that level of disposable income at the time) , or to discover some new band that sounds like a band I like. But of course your best advice is to buy music that makes me happy. Fortunately with streaming services you can try before you buy so should be shielded from picking up a lemon. Cheers and thanks again for that Family Bandstand album in vinyl. Bill

If crate digging brings you joy, do not stop. Especially, if you are just setting limits based on what other people are doing. I do not have a large collection, I have a bit over 100 records. Many big KZbinrs have thousands of records but I do not let that bother me because I know what I have and I listen to my records quite frequently. I also do not buy records just because they are popular in the VC community. Everyone has different tastes in music and each collection should be a good representation of that persons personal tastes. I have seen quite a lot of collection videos where I see a lot of the same records pop up over and over again. They are either very good records or people just buy them because they are popular. You mentioned a lot of genres of music that you own and that is great! I also have an eclectic collection of records at the moment which are fitting for every mood and season. I do not like to have filler records and so I do trade, sell, or donate those records I no longer enjoy or care for.
@billvinyl-lists45726 ай бұрын
Hi - thanks for watching my video and taking the time to write a comment. I do definitely enjoy crate digging but seldom pick up anything that I am not familiar with, or just on the basis of the album artwork ! I often search out something different based on MoJo or Uncut reviews. I’m reading a biography on Malcolm McLaren so may look for Duck Rock (but not Fans). I like to think that I have an eclectic collection and have lots of bases covered. Perhaps about half the collection would be albums that are owned by many in the vinyl community. I am now thinking there should be a purge of albums that no longer bring me joy ! Cheers Bill

Did I miss your explanation? Why have you decided to arbitrarily limit your record collection? I am pro-frogs and pro-Sound Affects. I think you should simultaneously expand in every possible enjoyable genre. Why wouldn't you?
@billvinyl-lists45726 ай бұрын
Hi Adam - thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. I’m not sure what made me think that I should limit my collection. I think that I don’t listen to new acquisitions as much as I did when I started collecting as a teenager when I knew all the songs and lyrics inside out. There is a storage aspect although my wife has never complained that there are too many records on the dining room shelves. I also like the idea of a carefully curated collection, but who am I trying to kid. Keep watching the channel to see if I follow your advice or Dale’s - thanks again Bill

Hi bill great video as usual 1111 seems pretty low to me . Personally I don’t believe in having too much media etc . The buying is a big part of the fun , you can become more selective and most of us are. .. though if I see something cheap I usually buy it and experiment. Sound affects is one of my favourites and I have metal box i like the idea that we all have mini art galleries. The Bowie painting is looking 👍… do you have any afrobeat? Fella kuti My son loves Records so he will have a lot of my collection.. though I don’t think about death much so the future of my collection isn’t a concern I’ll just keep enjoying it .. cheers bill 👍

Hi Bill congratulations on 100 videos and you should know I am here to help... I must confess my 2,000 target is only vinyl albums within my 'proper collection', so not CDs, cassettes, singles, and other random vinyl. My Discogs collection currently shows 6,528 items!!!! I think having a limit is a good idea (but listening to you in this video 1,111 could require some discipline). I think if you follow lists you'll risk eating up the spare 85 capacity very quickly, so wouldn't suggest doing that. I'd say better to go with 'what Bill wants to listen to' as your goal, with a bit of nonsense & nostalgia added in. I'd also suggest you list what you have that doesn't align with your goal (and maybe rank that). This will give you obvious candidates to purge once you reach the one-in-one-out stage...Once at that point you could ask yourself 'is this record I want to buy more important to me than the next one on the list I'd have to purge to include it in the collection?' You seem to have spent most of this video pondering what you might add to the collection...Maybe next time more on what you could remove perhaps? Otherwise you might need to increase your target number... However of course you need South American Frogs. 'Sound Affects' probably, 'Sound Effects' maybe not. If someone comes to dinner I panic and refuse to play music as I'd need three months notice to curate the perfect play list... Good luck with the journey and I hope you don't go as mad as me...

Hi Dale, I knew that I could count on you for words of wisdom to guide me on my record collecting journey. Apologies for dissing your collection- I must admit that I was surprised by the 2000 figure. Parker on the label of "Mystery Train" is Junior Parker who had the first recording of it...He was another "Jump Blues" artist and as such was not related to Tom Parker....Phillips is Sam, who did what was current in the day, took half credit on a song he had nothing to do with...Telling another poor black man that dj's would recognize his name and therefore play the record.. Alan Freed put his name on Cuck Berry's "Maybelline ", giving Chuck the same line of bs...he also cut in the guy who owned the sheet music store downstairs from the radio station he worked for ,thus "Maybelline " was credited to Berry/Freed/Russ Fratto....

Hi Terry - thanks for watching my video and taking the time to leave a very informative comment. As you noticed, I was not aware that the Parker credited on Mystery Train was Junior Parker. There were a lot of unscrupulous people in the music business in the 50s who took credit and money for songs they were not involved in writing. A very eclectic mix Bill covering just about all genres (except prog sadly). Love the Man at the Patti 10", they really should issue an expanded version. And talking about expanded versions, the Cheap Thrills set looks nice, but shame they didn't retain the Crumb cover. All Around My Hat was produced by head Womble Mike Batt and drew some criticism for going in a poppies direction, but for me it's a really enjoyable album. Hi Pete - thanks for watching. I remember that in the 70s I received a big box of 78s and at that stage I was getting familiar with early Rock and Roll. There was a few interesting e.g. a 78 of Rock around the Clock, a ragtime tune by Winnie Atwell (used as the theme tune for Pot Black - the snooker programme in black and white 😂) and a Freddy Bell and the Bell Boys one. 95% of the box was Bothy Ballads, accordion music and definitely not my taste - such a disappointment! Vinyls are ridiculously expensive nowadays. New vinyls generally seem to be around £40 plus. Crazy. I was vinyl shopping recently & a 2nd hand copy (although in pretty good nick) of Nevermind the Bollocks was around £35. 2nd hand!! It makes it pretty hard & expensive for young kids to get a vinyl collection going. Screamadelica is still such an amazing album. I bought it around 1993 I think & it still amazes me at how incredible that album is. I think Love Forever Changes, Velvet Underground & Nico & Underworld dubnobasswithmyheadman should also be in everyone's collection (in my humble opinion).

Hello from Auckland, New Zealand ! - Love Real Groovy ! They've moved again - third time since I moved to NZ in 2007 However disagree on the drink and browse .... love those surprise purchases turning up at the front door :)

Hi - thanks for watching. Real Groovy had a great selection- I picked up Who’s Missing and the Stones 12 X 5. We visited the North Island of NZ just before the pandemic and had a wonderful holiday. I can totally understand the thrill of the record packages arriving on your doorstep. Cheers Bill

Bill, what’s the last album you listened to in full?
@billvinyl-lists45729 ай бұрын
Hi Ken - thanks for watching. To be fair I usually listen to an album in full on each listen. But occasionally it is only 2 or 3 sides of a double album. To answer your question it was Beck’s Guero. Cheers Bill

Think i've purchased a one way ticket to the underworld..time to don the asbestos trousers!. i definitely support my ' local' shop and he's gobbled up most of my spending budget for many years. You could become a VC admin Bill wth commandments like these. I have a good number of those artists thst you showed but amazingly i have no Elvis whatsoever.

Hi Rob. Thanks for watching. Having set the Commandments I guess that I have the power to forgive. So you won’t be going to the HOT place. You really need to get some early (pre-army) Elvis. Also I must admit that I don’t stick to Commandment #1 - Cheers Bill

Interesting dinner party guest ideas! Nice Buzzcocks 7 and the Smiths Queen Is Dead is so classic. Its almost like a greatest hits too so many good songs on it. Cant go wrong with some Deep Purple! Cheers

Hi - the Queen is Dead has some great songs on it. I think Spiral Scratch is such a clever name for a record. Made in Japan, Machine Head, In Rock and Fireball are all classics- Cheers Bill

I'd fail at the first commandment, and that one, and that one, and that one too - oh dear I am a bad person! You probably had another five sub-commandments there too Bill. But I purged both my Jack White albums to achieve one of the earlier commandments Bill...
@billvinyl-lists45729 ай бұрын
Oh Dear Dale - I now have to reveal Commandment #11 - Though shalt not purge any record with a Jack White connection from your collection. Have a great weekend. Cheers Bill

Hello Bill,a most excellent tag response 👍👍👍 I have that Anti Nowhere League single...i think that the record distributors were raided by the police and the records confiscated under the obscene publications act ??? You're welcome to keep the Bay City Rollers 🤣🤣🤣 I use Discogs to buy records that im never likely to find in the wild and my collection is documented on it too. Im good at remembering what albums i have but often forget what 7" singles i have,so i often have to refer back to Discogs.
@billvinyl-lists45729 ай бұрын
Hi Nick - regarding BCR surely you have to agree that Shangalang and Bye Bye Baby are pop classics 😜. I have most albums catalogued in Discogs but only a few 7” records ! Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Cheers Bill

Excellent Bill....follow these commandments and you shall definitely stay on the straight and narrow😇😇😇 Ive got six of those albums from commandment 8 👍👍👍
@billvinyl-lists45729 ай бұрын
Hi Nick - thanks for watching. If only I could keep commandment #1. I would expect most of the VC to comply with #8 - Have a great weekend - Cheers Bill
