Chidima's story was too fast for South Africans when she emerged in the South African competition. What begun as confusion about her nationality, became more complex as her background by Home Affairs rivealed irregularities by her parents. Around the same time, Chidima left the country for Nigeria. So can we also understand that this whole saga happened very quickly and was not driven by hatrated, even though its easy to say so - because of xenophobia views about SA. If her parents were verified to be legal in South Africa, Chidima would have remained in South Africa. We all get verified here, e.g. for employment etc., at the request of the recruiting companies - to check if we are classified as South Africans legally, its not just a selective process against foreigners. (What is called xenophobia was targeted to illegal people who were seen to be affecting those communities with drugs, informal trading, informal ways of leaving, and involved in crime). At the time, it was sparked by Somalian shop owners, who were shooting people that were shop lifting. There are Nigerians leaving very peacefully in South Africa, but of course there are the ones involved in crime and women abuse, here in South Africa and I believe, elsewhere. This is the only reason Nigerians are even mentioned in the country, and not the other foreigners that are here. South Africa carries a lot of foreigners from neighboring contries 4 million, and we offered them employment, we are used to the concept of foreigners since SA has a bigger structured economy. I just feel that SA is misunderstood as to what it is experiencing with crime and illegalities going on in their country. Yes there is crime committed by South Africans lots of it, but then again its in their country, its not committed in another country, thats where the difference is. The emotions are high now around Chidima, and thats understandable, but there are issues and if we are refusing to listen and understand each others circumstances we, will forever be divided - due to ignorance and blind nationalism. We should now be asking how can we learn from this case, and how can we ensure that the thousands of other Chidimas in South Africa (there are many) do not go through the same route. Im sure that some families (with foreign parents) have started the conversations, to check if all is above board with their citezenship as children. We lost Chidima, but we still have thousands more and they are just as well presented as Chidima and other South Africans, and we will keep them as ordinary citizens if there are no legal quiries. All the best to Chidima, Im sure she will visit SA in the far future maybe as she has her family and friends here, if not its alright too, we hope she will be safe and successful. Its understandable that if her mother is in trouble with the law, then she, as her child cant seperate from her, I would do the same.
