Now granted its comissioned yes. But since it probably will never fight again, and if it did it honestly wouldnt be effective, why arent the crew armed and dressed with sword and gun from 1797 like they wouldve been, would be great for everybody id think

And to think, there were members of Congress who wanted to scrap her and turn her into firewood at one time, there was actually quite a political battle to keep her preserved. At least we did, unlike our war of 1812 foes who sent the single most decorated ship, of their entire navies half of a mellinia of history, to the breakers. Funny though, she wouldn't go, she kept slipping her tow lines and finally slipped it one last time and was driven so hard aground that she could be pulled off. They ended up scrapping her in place as best they could then let her be. If you wondering, I am referring to HMS Warspite.

In 1992 me and a buddy of mine visited the USS Constitution, and the sailor giving the tour said the reason it doesn't sail anymore is because no one knew how. I asked him what about all the crews from those Tall Ships. Wouldn't they know how? Answer was No, because the rigging was totally different. Glad to see they got it figured out.

They went to all that trouble in crew training and preparing the ship, towed her out, raised the sails - and the wind dropped to zero. So they never did it again. Bit sad really.

They sailed her in a similar way in 1997, so it’s a rare thing but whether they sail her is not based on wind but rather expense and risk of wear and tear to a 225 year old ship.

An apocryphal story. Many years ago, Queen Elizabeth II was touring the Constitution. As she walked the gun deck, she noticed that on a few of the 24 pounders was the British Royal Crest. She turnd to her husband Prince Phillip, and said "When we return, we'll have to speak to the Prime Minister about foreign arms sales"'. -mikenotpaula.

OLD IRONSIDES POEM Ay, tear her tattered ensign down! Long has it waved on high, And many an eye has danced to see That banner in the sky; Beneath it rung the battle shout, And burst the cannon’s roar;- The meteor of the ocean air Shall sweep the clouds no more! Her deck, once red with heroes’ blood Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o’er the flood And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor’s tread, Or know the conquered knee;- The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! O, better that her shattered hulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every thread-bare sail, And give her to the god of storms,- The lightning and the gale!

@dbernardstevens475
@dbernardstevens475 2 жыл бұрын
Mostly replicas, probably a few originals. But the saluting guns that fire are interesting because they are “modern” 40mm saluting guns disguised as the original cannons. They take the decorative breech off to reveal the smaller saluting gun hidden inside. So that’s basically a 2-inch charge. imagine the power/sound/smoke of using the full power charge for the 24 and 32 pdrs!

So that flag featuring the 13 red and white stripes and the old British Union Jack up in the corner is raised every new years day on prospect hill as well as some other places. Oh well that's good evidence of the original 13 English colonies I guess. And it's not surprising the Union jack was replaced with 13 stars because the Washington family symbol which dates back to the 12 century can still be seen all over England. It's a shield shaped symbol which feature two red stripes and three red stars.
