I’ll forever be grateful to Casey Casum, who while introducing another Eric Carmen song in that week’s countdown while I was a sophomore in college, made an aside about how he has to pay royalties to the Rachmaninoff Foundation for the use of the melody in the adagio movement of his Piano Concerto #2 for Eric’s hit single ’All By Myself’. And then he played snippets of All By Myself contrasted with the same tune from the concerto. As I was riveted, little did I realize what became a lifelong love of classical music.

Music is the highest aim to the divine , so it’s nobodies but the divine . All music came from a previous beautiful melody .

Beautiful comments here……as a now retired. Classical singer, I would encourage everyone to search out all of Rachmaninoff’s music, particularly his beautiful songs! They are exceptionally beautiful: I recommend a recording of Elizabeth Soderstrom, accompanied by Ashkenazy…..you won’t be disappointed! They met over several years to record them, whenever they were both in London.❤

It’s brilliant how you’ve “melted” together the very young, the older and the mature Eric Carmen performing that universal and long lasting song over decades. A fitting tribute to him. Hope his family sees it. It could be a nice memento for them now.😢

How I wish Eric Carmen himself had performed Rachmaninovs 2. piano concerto with some brilliant worldfamous symphony orchestra such as The Berliner Philharmonics and had it recorded on video of course for all his fans world wide to keep. He and the orchestra could even have toured the world and sold out every seat in even the biggest concert halls to delighted and grateful fans. Wouldn’t that have been a true tressure. But now it’s too late. Ohhh I’m so sad😢

Eric Carmen was born to parents who were "Russian Jews." Sergei Rachmaninoff was also a "Russian Jew." Sergei wrote the piano 🎹 concerto while Eric wrote the song Lyrics. Both MEN had been ostracized by friends, family and fans for being "Jewish." That in itself would be a lonely journey to travel.I believe that is exactly what Eric Carmen's song lyrics to "All By Myself" were intimately about.

My mom was a concert pianist and saw Rachmaninoff in concert in Denver back in the day. I saw Eric Carmen with the Raspberries in the 70's. She passed recently, I didn't know the connection till now, very special!
