@mountwestmusicАй бұрын
🙊 the sound packs are so cool, but they are still used with such a finesse in the games! I wonder how much processing they went through by Kelly
Ай бұрын
@@mountwestmusic When I've looked at this in the past it seems really varied, a lot of people pitched things around and did odd little edits with minimal processing, but some went bonkers on the time stretching and verb The mention of ADAT caused an involuntary chill haha, When they used to corrupt it was a nightmare, I had to use one at college for a bit and abandoned it as soon as possible for a DAW. The FZ1 was a pretty low-cost 16-bit sampler for the day, the max rate was 32kHz so it's pretty crunchy.
@mountwestmusicАй бұрын
My condolences, working with it was such a hassle. I used an ADAT because I wanted to learn how to work on tape, but eventually transferred everything over to Logic to mix and master it. It's interesting how the way people use samples today hasn't really changed that much then... Sort of sounds like you describe how a producer would work with Splice samples

It wasn't always this way, and in fact the music in HL2 would even resume from the point in the track where you'd quick save (loading transitions are just quick save/load events between maps anyway). Even in OG Half-Life the music would continue through loading transitions thanks to playing from the CD audio track (which was independant of the mainboard, but that was because those were the days where you'd run a dedicated cable from the CD drive to the soundcard, no CPU intervention at all.

huh, Tyler McVicker recently talked about that in the source 2 leaks for the potential upcoming "half life 3". They're trying to stream in new level sections instead of loading them from scratch, this will actually solve the music issue.
@dbgtbrasil5Ай бұрын
the music wasn't an issue in half life 1 you could go through loading screens and the music would stay on.
@mountwestmusicАй бұрын
Yes I'm curious why they let this slide into HL2... I suppose that they wanted full control over how much audio was loaded onto memory at every moment of the game, but all the source engine sounds are in .wav format so they should have been able to stream it directly from storage. Although the HDDs back then weren't running with the same speed like today :)
@mountwestmusicАй бұрын
@@dbgtbrasil5 yup it's pretty basic stuff how you work around that. But I suppose that they wanted more control over the game's memory load in HL2 and the audio just happened to go along with the ride on that choice 🤷♀
@dbgtbrasil5Ай бұрын
@@mountwestmusic IDK man. Since they haven't fixed it in all these years, even portal 2 had the problem of the music stopping on loading screen, I think the source engine source code might have a very profund limitation that makes it hard for them to fix it (source games usually stop responding while loading, that might have something to do with it). What they did in portal 2 was a workaround of manually setting the music back on after the loading.
