This was useful though there is a third part you do not show...the plastic rectangle with the white filter on it....I cannot locate where this goes....

Sorry it's no longer in my possession . Was doing this repair and it occurred to me to just record just what I was doing in the moment.

As I remember that plastic rectangle you speak of.... it was clipped up above the fuser I think. Just a breather filter..... I don't believe it's a critical component to functionality.

Thank you for this video. I am not very technically minded but I have just managed to change the fuser unit on our MFC-L8690CDW, saving hundreds of pounds on buying a replacement copier/printer. The video was excellent and despite my advancing years (75 years old) the only help that I needed from my husband was to separate the main electrical socket because my fingers weren't strong enough to do it! I am now off to look for a video on how to re-set the fuser unit counter!

I have a 1970 with an audible click click click on the left side ...like a thin metal strip being flicked. Changes with speed.. Speedo cable symptom?

Try pulling out the inner cable from the gearbox end. Then, put some graphite grease on it - I use copper slip - or normal grease - and then poke it gently up and down. Clean the cable with light oil to remove more solid grease that might cause hiccups. A slight hiccup in the smoothness of the cable causes a bit of twisted flexing and then when it springs back it zips into your speedo and makes the needle wobble. New cable? If you just pull out the old cable you can slip the new one up the old outer - if it is OK - and then not need to remove the dash. Just lube it up with graphite grease and poke it in and out a few times, carefully etc. I just cleaned lubed my old cable and now it is fine - no noise or the needle jumping about - without removing it. Make sure it lines up with the spline when putting it back together. Gently.

This is only possible on very few vehicles with mechanical speedometers, as most cables have a pressed, or crimped brass bushing at the top end of cable which would prevent it from being pulled through the cable housing from the transmission side. You can see this bushing on the cable in this video.

Two things wrong with this method 1) The mixture will eventually flow through the cable housing into the transmission, not healthy. 2) The cable generally can be pulled out from the top, cleaned, inspected, coated with Luberplate and re-inserted. Graphite is not recommended, it hardens after time. Best bet is Luberplate, that sort of beige-white paste grease found in most machine shops. You need to completely remove the cable from the housing and apply a thin coating with your fingers as you push the cable back through the housing. Also apply a 2-3 drops of Triflow liquid lube to the brass tip bushing at rear of the speedo and work it in. PS: Usually it's not the cable making the noise, but the speedo head itself because the magnet shaft may be near seizing up due to lack of any lube and/or worn magnet shaft bushings. If it seizes up, it will snap the cable in two.

Cars that were built in 1950’s have graphite in the tube. 50-60 years later it needs to be replaced because of noise. As I’m saying, 50-60 years later. All of a sudden it isn’t recommended because it gets “ hard”. Now tell me what vehicle you have that has gone 50-60 years with your method to make your method better. I’ll wait.

@@truthseeker0219I don't know if it's "better", I just know that most of the cable repairs I made were caused by graphite plugged cables. Vehicles? Most all of them, including mine. I worked in a speedo shop and replaced many cables, most of which were totally dried out and either snapped in half or worn so badly the speedo needle would wobble or wip. Many times the cable in a 50 year old car was fine, but the speedo head itself finally locked up and snapped the cable.

@gary Banta thank you for this I'm a complete noob to this I recently inherited my grandfather's 1990 toyota 22re . The speedo doesn't work and have been looking on how to replace it . I took a part the dash got the cable unplugged but realized quickly I could not pull enough slack to plug it back in .. how do I get that slack and do u have a video of how to replace the cable I haven't even found a great write up on where the cable runs or even the speedo location on the transmission. . any advice would help incredibly.

Yeah, I should have mentioned how to get the slack needed to pull out the dash assembly .... 1st thing is to unscrew the bolt and cable at the transmission... easy enough to trace it backwards... Release it from the transmission and push cable into firewall.

I'm sure it would help but for all the effort involved in getting to it I would go for the graphite spray at minimum. you just want to do it once
