I need your input on something. I am having a debate with someone on the proper way to pronounce Mps roezlii. They believe the oe should be pronounced as in Coelogyne, I said no because it is named after a Czech named Roezl. I asked my Czech friend to say it, and it isn't a sound that correlates directly to English, but is more similar to the German ö. Thoughts?
@MattbyNature4 күн бұрын
Hello! I would not pronounce his name as "Reetsl" but I would say "Rötzl" with a short ö. He might be from what is Czechia now but based on his name I would assume he might have Austrian heritage so German pronunciation of the oe should apply.
@michaelmccarthy40774 күн бұрын
@@MattbyNature thank you. That is what I thought. The way my Czech friend said it, I would write phonetically as rhut-zl, because that is the closest to my ear, not quite ö but very very close. Much appreciated my friend!!
@MattbyNature4 күн бұрын
@ I‘m glad to help! I suppose the sound of the short ö is similar to the œ in the French word œuf (egg).
@michaelmccarthy40774 күн бұрын
@@MattbyNature ah, yes, I hadn't thought of that. But funny you should mention French, because I was thinking today about Neofinetia and, honestly, I think the only reason that genus was invalidated and moved to Vanda was because no one knew how it should be pronounced. Finet was French, so the t should be an elide, but the debate raged about if the t should be hard or soft (rather than not pronounced at all).

I so badly want to make a joke about friction hurting the tip, but I will refrain. I see you are having the same experience with mooreana. I gave up trying to import it because they just shriveled up and died before they could start roots to support the plant. I hope one day I can find one domestically that isn't ridiculously priced, but if not, oh well.
@MattbyNature22 күн бұрын
I get it. Excessive friction is a major issue to tips especially if the sheath has been removed as commonly done in North America. Cattleya mooreana is quite a rare species to come across so importing it seemed like a great opportunity. I'm still hopeful that it might make it but let's be realistic...

If you are located in Europe as well, I would recommend you to get in touch with Regina Elsner - she's the one who organizes it all. elsorchids(at)aol(dot)com (sorry, but youtube is sometimes weird with links and email addresses). @MattbyNatureАй бұрын
Oh, no! Why do you get anxious during repotting? I have some repots coming up soon. Do you have any specific questions? I could make a video. There are also some other repots on the channel. Let me know! I feel like in my conditions mounting plants is just not ideal. The ambient humidity is low and I’m not the most avid waterer. But I know other people have great results with mounted plants especially in a greenhouse.

Not to worry - Myrmecophilas are tough - everything should work out just fine! My favorite potting media for them is lava rock - fairly large.
@MattbyNatureАй бұрын
Thanks a lot! Lava rock can be rather water retentive, eh? I’m waiting for the roots to grow into the substrate more but the plant is still drying out
@lindahartman2279Ай бұрын
Yes, it is quite porous, so it does take up water, but it does dry (at least here in Florida). I use large chunks about 3 to 4 inches ( 8-10 cm). Don't worry too much about the root growth. I bought my Myrmecophilas from the head of the local orchid society - it was just five pseudobulbs, no media no roots. I put them in a basket with lava rock. It did take a while (1.5 years) but now it is a nice plant. The pseudobulbs did dehydrate considerably, but they supplied the plant as they are meant to.

Gorge, what a hard watch. I was so scared for your fingers and for that plant. The only thing that helped me keep calm was the Swiss knife and the freshly washed hair. I did notice your hair seemed down all of a sudden ahaha then I realized in the end it wasn't just in my mind ahaha (continuity). Cannot wait to see how this turns out. Can I ask why didn't you go for a bigger pot?
@MattbyNatureАй бұрын
Hahaha. I knew people might pick up on it but I can always rely on you! That knife is so dull… very sad. It’s just growing roots and I don’t want them to grow into media that’s constantly wet. A small pot makes sure that the media can dry out so no roots rot off.

Hi 👋🏻 finally got a chance to watch this one. Wow 🤩 amazing blooms! I want a Cattleya Rex now. I have a baby dowiana. I’m petrified of this little diva but it’s doing ok the 9 months I’ve had it. AND I love seeing your young plants. I have lots of those too. My Cattleya are only just starting to get mature enough to even think of blooming. It’s getting exciting. Seeing others journeys with young ones to blooming is very helpful and interesting. Could you refresh how you fertilize in a video? Byeeee
@MattbyNatureАй бұрын
Amazing!!! Keep us posted how the dowiana is developing. I love these plants. Some of my younger ones are a bit more capricious - especially the little aurea I have. I agree with you concerning the young plants. My collection is also slowly maturing and coming into bloom. Still many to go but the ones that managed to flower already are my pride and joy. I can absolutely make a video about my watering regime and fertiliser but it’s going to be very boring haha. I don’t do much in that regard.

You said you do warm up the space unless it is too cold and so, what is the lowest temperature you let them get? Thank you for all the information and a happy weekend to you ❤❤❤
@MattbyNatureАй бұрын
Haha! Thanks a lot! What do you mean with the threads? I live in a rental apartment so temperatures can go only as low as ca. 15 °C during the day and maybe 10 °C at night if it's extremely cold outside. I do not let the room go that low though. 15 °C night temperature is the lowest I'm comfortable with - especially considering that I share the flat with the plants and I don't want to freeze to death haha
