Penn station had regular service until 2007, with limited red line trips. At steel plaza, the 2 unused tracks branch off to penn station. Today, the tracks are occasionally used as sidings if a large event happens and the lines need extra trains. In the future, PRT want to bring back allentown service and run allentown trains through penn station into the strip district

Part of the reason that this was never very useful is the lack of Amtrak passenger trains using the station. The path the tracks take under the city was originally a barge canal. The federal government has a rule that if you take money to build something but then don't use it, you have to give the money back. That's why they pretended this was useful by running one or two a day. It's also the reason behind the Wabash tunnel disaster. To avoid having to pay the money back, they specified it was an HOV project after they found out the buses couldn't safely fit in the tunnel. Ultimately a few years ago, PAT did away with the HOV restriction. I would defy even native Pittsburghers to find the South portal of that tunnel without using the Internet.

I think this is the entrance to the East Busway. It will be 100 years until they expand the trains to the east. They have invested billions in natural gas busses and carbon based on the poorer communities to the east.

I had a 2001 SE with a 5 speed stick; great fun to drive, and even with the modest 150HP, it could really move if you knew how to shift. Kind of a gas guzzler in the city, mileage was very good on the highway

FUN FACT: Around the 9:55 mark of this video is where a portion of the movie Flashdance was filmed. Mostly along the tracks which were not there during construction back in 1982. One of the scenes filmed here was where Alex walks up to a food vending cart and quickly gets into a little argument with her boss/boyfriend. Most of that area back in 1982 was just dirt.
