Written in 1962 or '63, I believe, by Etta James, Leroy Kirkland and Pearl Woods, "Somethin's Got a Hold On Me" was produced by Leonard and Phil Chess, at Chess Records in Chicago. Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel... rippin' the tune raw! These Canadian Squires, The Hawks, they were the band to beat the band! Listen to Levon, "Leevon", layin' it on! They had McGill Ph.D.s in Applied Intuition. A Roots Blues Rock musician since 1962, grew up on the border not far from Neal Young and Robbie Robertson... I do feel their passion and hope, if some of their genius rubbed off on me, a bit might stick. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

"Work Song" comes from Nat Adderley's childhood experience seeing a group of Black men, convict laborers singing while they worked on a chain gang, paving the street in front of his family’s home in Florida. Nat Adderley co-wrote it with Oscar Brown Jr. in 1959 or '60. Seems Brown later added lyrics, so the Hawk's lyrics might be Brown's. The Hawks loved Cannonball's tune and were working on their version at the same time their friends Paul Butterfield, Sam Lay, Jerome Arnold, and Mark Naftalin were workin on their version. Bet that's Garth Hudson with his customized Lowery-Leslie organ playin the lead break. He was the only formally trained musician in the Hawks and brought passion for technological experimentation. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Used to go there to dance on Friday nights in the 60's. Robbie Lane and the Disciples, Little Caesar and the Councils, Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. Great music and great times back in the day.

What is the connection to Richard Manuel?

He sings it. It should actually be labelled as 'Levon and the Hawks', but I was just sending Richard some love

In the 1960s,I grew up on Raven, which was just down the road from Jane and Wilson, and went to St. Philip's Neri school which was a five-minute walk from Crang Plaza. Unfortunately, I was too young to go and see the Hawks play there, but I have older friends who did see them. This piece is amazing. Rick and Richard's vocals are unmistakable and they come through so clear. Thank you for sharing.

I hear a singer who ressembles a bit R. Manuel. And a band which doesn’t sound like the Hawks at all. No guitar? Hammond organ instead of a Lowry?
@stranglehold40182 жыл бұрын
The whole bootleg sounds like this except for Robbies solos, which pop out. Its a rough recording from a joint somewhere in Ontario. As far as Richard, it sounds exactly like Richard.

Richard's singing is otherworldly in these tracks. Can't believe how incredibly good he was. And for his age at time or even later. It's a shame they got discovered by Dylan.
