When I design something, I try not to go less than 1/8” to keep it fairly simple. I’ll admit, metric WOULD be easier than imperial, but I’d need to buy all new measuring tools, and given the current state of our economy, that’s not happening right now lol. That or spend extra time converting measurements. Plus you’d have to convince the entire country to switch.
@shawwoodworkingdiy3 ай бұрын
Hehe thank you for your explanation... its more of a measuring tools thing, than that metric is difficult to understand....the rest of the world is starting to grasp imperial usage. due to the big influence America has on the rest of the world.

Imperial and using fractions compared to metric and decimals is similar to analog vs digital clocks. I find it very intuitive, for example, what is half of 3/8"? Double the denominator - 3/16. What is double 3/8"? Halve the denominator - 3/4. Dead simple - no calculator. I think a lot of metric users don't understand that Imperial measurements only use a base of 2. I can attest to this ignorance as I've read furniture assembly instructions that refer to the "3/5 inch screw" - no such thing in Imperial.
@shawwoodworkingdiy4 ай бұрын
Nice way of putting it, analog and digital.... i guess if u are cultured around imperial, there's nothing difficult about it, which is understandable... but lets say u watching a video in metric, what could be the tricky part? That u dont have the measuring tool in ur shop?... or the convertions from centimeters to millimeters?
@scratchypants14 ай бұрын
@@shawwoodworkingdiy Measuring tools would be one element, yes. Fixed tooling is another - drill bits, saw blade kerf/dado stacks, router bits. For what it's worth, I'm from Canada - metric but with a heavy US influence. I am also Gen X, so I grew up with both and am now quite confused as a result. I understand indoor temperatures in Fahrenheit, but outside in metric. Long distances are measured in kilometers while shorter distances are in feet. The list goes on...

What wood are you planning for the "real" build (not this prototype)? Also, if you're going to put in the energy to make a nice one, you may want nicer joinery than the overlapping butt joints (though that does add complexity). I could see miters with splines or dowels being pretty cool. Neat build!
@shawwoodworkingdiy4 ай бұрын
Planning on using higher quality plywood and maybe pine aswell, hardwood is pretty scarce here in southern Africa, not sure why... i love that suggestion, think finger joints could also look pretty cool, aswell as the mitred joints. il have pattern plywood on the top on some of the builds, which should make it pretty neat aswell... thanx for that suggestion

Id really like to know, what are the challenging things when it comes to using metric units? Besides just not having the metric measuring tools. With me, imperial is complex because of the fractions, i feel they just complicate things, yet the decimal is so simple, its like im in primary school again 😂 id love to convert for u guys, but i feel it would complicate things more for you, since it will be inches into decimals 🤷♂️...eg 12cm- 4.72inchs... how would u find that on ur rulers?
@FuzzyLiger2 ай бұрын
Easy answer, familiarity. Ether system is easy if you were raised in it. It is exactly the same with language. Metric makes more sense but here in America, I wish we had converted to metric and maybe someday we will, by the time we are in our early teens our minds have been programmed to understand roughly how much a pound is or a mile, inch, foot ect. If I tells someone go about a mile down the road they won’t need any aid but their mind will kick in around a mile to start looking for what it is. If I tell the person go about a kilometer they have no bases for understanding as we get older we get more stuck in our ways. Metric is often used in military and science so I’m not sure why we can’t just teach both for 10 to 20 years, put signs in both as they are replaced and then after that time or say in 30 years just remove all the imperial system. Though we will almost always have an endless issue with everything we have that is built off the imperial metric will clash for generations. But it’s just a better idea to switch. I’d say possibly with our road sides as well but I feel like that’s just asking way too much!
@shawwoodworkingdiy2 ай бұрын
@FuzzyLiger it makes a lot of sense when it comes to familiarity... I guess that is why Imperial feels tricky to me, but the more I watch american woodworkers, the less foreign it sounds.. I just keep converting in my head, as long as the fractions are up to an 1/8 ...thanx for the detailed answer. Nice getting your perspective from that side 🫡
