Not quite dissonant but very modern and a far cry from his early symphonies, My favorites are still his 3rd and 4th.

Good singing with nice enunciation, but as often happens with this piece the choir loses the battle of the bands with the brass. Could be the problem is with the recording method, but it's more than likely the composer's overblown writing for this type of ensemble.

while I sympathize with "Open Reels" needing $$$$$upport, interrupting my listening (and I was quite immersed) with an Ad was so startling, so dramatic and horrific a break from the place the music had taken me, it was a revelation in itself..... a dire one. Nothing is free.

Hello do you happen to have the whole series of Cornell Wind Ensemble vinyl recordings? Some of the ones I am really interested in i can’t find even online. I Would like to do a project on wind ensemble/band music and those Cornell records have lots of rare pieces. Thanks for reading!!

Excellent symphony & performance the recording imperfections don't matter or detract from the enjoyment at all. Very underrated composer & deserves much wider programming & exposure. Reminds me of the same neglect suffered by Malcolm Arnold. Beats all those "clever me" modern composers into the shade.

As a devotee of Hovhaness, I had wondered why I had not heard of this piece, and why it is so rarely heard. Now I know.

Please do not let Robert Ward 's music fall to the ash pile if history. There so few recordings if his music and all old ones i fear his music will vanish. Too much melody? Harmony not dissonant enough?. Not folky enough? At least this fine Amdrican symphony still exists.

This is new to me from Piston. His later style similar to Symphony 7 and 8. Takes a couple listens but enjoy it now. Starts slow and enigmatic then gets to the Piston of syncopation. A slower pace than usual. This Pine Tree grows on you ! (Get it. Pine Tree grows on you?)

Yes. Strong influence of Bartok but takes nothing away from the concerto. Its captivating just as Bartok is captivating. Rythmic drive, in a harmonic language very understandable. I like it a lot. Im glad its available. I met her in 1975. Most amenable. I never heard this work before.

John Vincent - so underrated. The two pieces Ormandy conducted, are part of the new Ormandy complete stereo recordings box - I just love those pieces. And this is an amazing piece. Wish there were more. This may be coming on CD, I'm happy to say.

It is so interesting to me to hear Dunlap's concert work. It is pretty well realized and put together. His film scores are popular with many, but I find them pretty dissonant and lacking in subtlety. Per published interviews I have learned that he was not proud of the film scores. He obviously had talent. I'd love to hear more of his concert music.

This is a piece in deep crisis -- but a wonderful challenge for a cellist! I particularly like the slow movement, which provides some welcome introspection amidst all the blows and dislocations of the first movement and the furious fight and activity in the final movement, when the cellist seems to strike back at a vicious world.

I'm surprised his music is not more popular. It sounds like a type of post-minimalism married to Romanticism. I just heard Cindy McTeefabulous ,inventive Circuits and someone said she sounded similar to Torke's Atlanta Olympic Games music . I don't feel or hear that at all. This sounds like a Tchaikovsky finale -not at all 20th century or most importantly American ;though Torke knows what he wants and is skilled I was more won over by Circuits in Slatkin's fantastic reading . The brass here sound like soundfont created music ;actually the recording sounds so mechanical and sure footed as if it knows exactly where it has to go without there being any inflection or surprises .Neo-Romantic,reactionary and calculated . I want to hear more McTee because of what Ive heard and i want to hear more torke because i feel his reputation has cheated me thinking I would have a great experience not revisit Russian sounding Wintry music . Torke has a bigger reputation and yet I had never heard of Cindy. only checked her out because she's married to Slatkin . Telephonebook is next .But lots more looking for McTee definitely !

As much as Zimbalist should be praised for this work, Luvisi also deserves some credit. The story I've heard is that when Kapell died, Zimbalist had a hard time getting another pianist to premiere the work. Apparently, he had been turned down on multiple occasions because the score--written by a non-pianist for a technical wizard--was nearly unplayable. Luvisi had just joined faculty at Curtis (age 18!) when he was approached about the premiere. Being new to faculty (and the young guy) there was no way he could turn down Mr. Zimbalist. He reluctantly agreed to it but had to approach Zimbalist on many occasions about tweaks to make the work playable. Thankfully he agreed to many of Mr. Luvisi's suggestions. One can tell it was still a horrifyingly difficult piece even after the rewrites. Kudos to Zimbalist for writing beautiful music and to Luvisi for agreeing to play in Kapell's shadow. The result is stunning! Thanks for posting!

I have listened the final version many times but, unlike Schuman, I think it works better with the original second movement. A truly great 20th century violin concerto.

Hello. Thank you for posting this rare gem. I was wondering if you had the companion piece on this LP, the Sonata for Violin and Piano by Roy Harris. It doesn't appear to be on KZbin, and it hasn't been reissued either on CD or in digital form that I know of. I know Sony Classical has reissued some of the Modern American Music LPs in recent years, and perhaps they will get around to this one eventually. But, I'd like to hear the Harris sonata. I may also share these rare recordings on a radio show which I host called Classics and Beyond. So, if by chance you do have the Harris sonata, could you please upload it when you have time? Thank you very much, Jason Longwell
